Beautiful review (even if I kept reading Cassiel as Castiel and wondered if he too, had an inappropriate relationship with a human.)
The shot ends with one of the two angels, Damiel, sitting next to a passenger and touching the passenger's shoulder with his hand to comfort the man who is in despair. Human hands create human life. Angel hands draw from the humans, but can give back only comfort or solace.
I love that. I love the image of the angel reading beside the man. U2 made a video using Wings of Desire as inspiration and what made the video so touching to me was the idea of having something you can't see/feel giving your comfort. A true angel on your shoulder.
Peter Falk is also in the movie, but I won't spoil his story except to give you this hint. Look at his eyes when he smiles.
Hey, but doesn't he have a fake eye?! That helps none! :)
This is a good movie to watch if you are in a contemplative mood. It is certainly different from most other movies and is a very personal point of view from Mr. Wenders. I have to

When they say "Cassiel" in German, it sounds like Castiel. When I first heard it, I had to look at the subtitles to make sure of what I heard. This movie can become very talky in places and I tend to ignore the dialog and subtitles and just look at the visuals in those cases.
But there for a while, I was thinking that Castiel was going down the same pathway to earth for the love of Dean, but he didn't.
Did they get the name of Castiel in homage to this movie? I know that Castiel from SPN was supposed to be a sort of John Constantine looking figure. I don't know about the name. But all the angels in the movie wear long overcoats and ponytails.
Oh lovely review. Those screencaps take my breath away.
Love the comparison to metropolis. That's one of my fave films and I was amazed that such a film could have been made before all the high tech special effects wizardry we have now. Amazing.

They found a 16mm print in Argentina recently and the movie has been pretty much restored to its original cut (they might still be missing about 6 minutes). I'm not sure if the most recent cut is on DVD yet, but we must see it sometime.
And yes, Isabella Blow! She's wearing the Orange Bubble hat in my comment icon.
She makes Anna Wintour seem so conventional and tame. But Andre Leon Talley makes up for it. Thank Goodness for him.

Have you heard about the recent restoration of Metropolis?
