I didn't say anything on Father's Day because I felt like I couldn't that day. It was too much. But I should try and say something. It just seems right to, to help say goodbye to it all like Justin says. And to just let people know. Because--just because.

My dad's name was Nathan. All of the mail came to the house for Nathan, not Nate. He didn't go ( Read more... )

They are quite common where I am from, miss. Sometimes a nuisance, but necessary to keep the flowers blooming.

Where I'm from they're not around. At least not locally. It makes sense that we didn't have many flowers. I had never seen one except for in a book.

Well, you must be careful not to get too close, they can give one an awful sting if troubled.

I cannot imagine that a world without flowers would be very pleasant.

It can't be too bad. They're not poisonous.

My world--is really different from what I hear. The air isn't clean, people are usually sick. But it isn't all bad. There must be some good parts to it. The music is wonderful. Sometimes, when you can see the night sky, it's the most beautiful thing.

They are indeed poisonous, miss, and will give one a terrible welt which can indeed cause even a grown man to died if unattended. Of course, that is only in rare cases and for most it is merely the pain that acts as a deterrent.

I am glad to hear it is not all bad. Do you miss it, even now?

Oh. I'll never leave any wound unattended. That's not smart. I'm Shilo. You don't have to call me miss.

...some things. I like it here. I'm learning so much.

I should hope you wouldn't, it is always a waste to lose a young lady in the prime of her life to something that could have been prevented.

You wouldn't be offended if I did, though, would you? It is only polite. As for myself, my name is A. J. Raffles, a pleasure to meet you.

Yes, there certainly is many opportunities for broadening one's horizons. I for one am rather satisfied with this new adventure.

Prime of my life? I feel like I only started.

No. I wouldn't. Am I supposed to call you Mr. A.J? Or just mister?

What was your home like?

Certainly there is plenty of time left to grow.

Raffles, or A J would be fine.

Certainly cloudier and full of smoke in the air from the factories and such, but one hardly notices when indoors with good company or out on the cricket pitch. Certainly not so much as it completely blots out the sun, even in the hyperboles of the Romantics. Indeed, London is the most beautiful city I have ever been in, there is nothing like it in all the world.

I have growing to make up for.

I'll call you A J then. No one should be called by their last name.

Your place was polluted too? Factories do that. Companies don't care though. I'd like to go to London someday. I don't think yours is the same as mine though. What's the cricket pitch?

No one? It is habitual, where I am from. Mr Raffles if one has just been introduced, Raffles if one is an aquaintance, AJ to my friends. But I would never begrudge a lady's desires in such a matter.

I should hope you have an opportunity to, miss, I cannot recommend it enough. Even if it is not quite the same in both our worlds.

Cricket is only the best sport on Earth. I am surprised that you do not know it. The pitch is the area of field that you play on.

Maybe not no one. And I'm still going to call you AJ, anyway.

When I go home, I'm going to travel. I don't want to stay on Sanitarium Island forever.

There are so many sports, how can it be the best?

That is fine with me.

An island with a name such as that, I do not blame you. I was travelling myself when I arrived here, in the Mediterranean.

It is the best because I play it, my dear.

The Mediterranean! What was that like?

Technically any game you play could be the best one by that logic.

Warm and quite beautiful, full of colour and life. Luscious and languid, very far away from the cold stone of London town.

But I would only play the best, you see.

The way you describe it, the Mediterranean is like a place in a novel.

Are you really that good?
