You continue to run with the themes that make this story so interesting - particularly regarding the matter of the poolhouse's safety. It's one of those little responsible parenting details that seems insignificant until someone throws some light on it. In hindsight it's a telling oversight on the part of the Cohens, particularly given Kirsten's business and the fact that she first started warming up to Ryan when his interest in architecture was revealed - you'd think that somewhere along the way this issue would hace occurred to her ( ... )

Since I happened to be driving by, just let me say that I share your feelings on many levels. I think we've discussed this, but I've always believed that Sandy was "ready" and receptive when he met Ryan. IMHO, their paths seemed to cross at a time when Sandy was in a crisis mode of his own, although one far less desperate than Ryan's cycle that had been set in motion by the Atwoods and Co. long ago ( ... )

Thanks for the pardon- and permission!

Poor pound puppy... Sandy may have had the best of intentions, but zero attention span and sense of commitment. He wavered so quickly after the "muffin scene" with Julie in that very first arc. If only he'd taken just a little of responsibility and gone beyond making the statement. Ryan wasn't a prototype concept version who was "in development" when Sandy had the inclination to acknowledge him.

I think your points are all well-taken. I do tend to give Sandy more credit than I give Kirsten, simply because Sandy was the one to initially see something in Ryan no one else seemed to see. I probably give Sandy too much credit for the whole conversation with Ryan where Sandy tells Ryan that his father wants to see him. When Sandy stood up to Frank Atwood, I was pleased and shocked. That's about the only time any Cohen did anything that put themselves at risk in order to protect Ryan from harm. Sandy scored big for me there -- despite his many ommisions and failures. (But that doesn't mean I don't hold a grudge. 'At least the jumpsuit still fits', anyone ( ... )

As I was saying to beach, it's almost as though Sandy was using Ryan to test Kirsten, bringing him home the way he did - and it was a rigged test.

Viewed in that light Sandy's actions really weren't altruistic at all.

All the comments I've seen on this post seem to come down to the same thing: We love the Cohens for what they could have been, not for what they were (except for Seth. Seth's a lost cause).
