Just finished the tome version. All the books in one hefty paperback. I still enjoyed it!

Thanks to richardabecker , I now have a copy of this book. It has always been on my "to read" list, but I just never made the effort to get my hands on a copy.

I finished this trilogy a couple of days ago. It's high fantasy dragged through gritty reality. The characters are gritty, with varying degrees of education, morality, and social ability. It was riveting. I didn't even skip stuff, like I usually end up doing when there is too much description going on, and not enough story. The dialog is fantastic ( Read more... )

Today I went to the Antiquarian Book Fair at the Hyatt Regency in Culver City. Can I even begin to describe how overwhelmingly wonderful that was? I was able to hold and peruse first edition volumes illustrated by Wyeth, Dulac, Rackham, and others. This hardback was sitting on a table with other books at Ralph's grocery store, of all places, for $3.99. I thought what the heck, I like Stephen Coonts, can't beat $3.99 either. I was at Costco when I found this book. I remember reading "Pillars of the Earth" and was thrilled to find a sequel. "World" takes place a couple hundred years after the first book, and focuses on 4 individuals, following them through childhood to maturity. They are from all walks of medieval England: Nobility, clergy, merchant, and peasant. ( Read more... )

Finished a couple of days ago. I liked the feel of this book. It had a certain "vintage" SF/F feel to it that was refreshing. Simple story telling that relied on good storytelling to tell the story, even though it had some complex and convoluted plot lines. How refreshing. Well, I finished the book today. I had not started it until yesterday afternoon. In retrospect, it was a pretty quick read. I really enjoyed the resolution, but there was a little too much book there that I thought was unwarranted.
