She founds him on a road to nowhere. Technically, at the road’s side. Sitting on a fallen tree. He doesn’t look up when she stops the car, picking up the length of her dress as she gets down and faces him.

“You never were good at hiding,” she says, sitting by his side. Contrary to her night clothes, he is weary comfortable jeans and a homemade sweater, and his hands play with a little sculpture of wood he is turning to life.

“I have no intention of hiding, my lady.”

“Such courtesies were left in the past, Dragonlord.”

“So did that term.”

Nimueh finds herself laughing, her hands still holding the wraps of the dress she bought for the night before. (A party- a kingly ball.)

“Shouldn’t you be hiding then?” She asks, leaning over his shoulder to get a better look at the little wood dragon. “Why would you be here if- unless…”

“She is not here.” The reply is dry as the weather and she lets the smile fall of her lips. He shrugs and adds: “I just like it.”

She stares around, the open road, the endless landscape. There’s no sound to be heard but their own breaths and she doesn’t need more explanations than that.

“Won’t he find you?” She wonders, her hand moving towards him but falling before it reaches its destination.

“Will you tell him?”

“I didn’t” He looks up at her then, a glimpse of a smile (of a smile she remembers from back when-) twitching on his lips. “Besides, I’m going the other way.” She does touch him this time, a little squeeze of his empty hand.

“You will go back, you always do.”

“Were would be the fun if I didn’t?”

She gets herself on her feet, letting the dress fall on the grass this time.

“Will you see him?” The question startles her for a second. Merlin, he means Merlin.

“Do you want me?” Nimueh hates the sad smile on his face, as if she had painted it herself once and again over time.

“I’d rather you did not. But did that ever stopped you?”

“I guess not.” She shrugs it off. He is fully staring at her now and her inability to understand what he is thinking makes her uncomfortable (she will never get used to that). “You know, he reminds of you.” She steps forward as she says so, staring down at him.

“Don’t-“

She stops and looks away. Silence settles between them for a while until she dares break it. “I should go anyway. I’ll leave you to your hiding.”

“I am not hiding.”

“When aren’t you?”

She doesn’t wait for the answer, her feet drove her away and it’s only after the engine is on that she dares look behind and see that he is already nowhere to be find.

For now.
