Drop Da Bomb

So the DPRK (Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea), aka North Korea, has tested another Nuclear Device and has launched several ballistic missles.  Further to this, after a few threats from the US et al, they have now effectively torn up the peace treaty that took 3 years, thousands of lives and millions of limbs to write, and has lasted 50 years.  Ok so the war never technically ended, but still, there has been an effective peace for 50 years.  8 Years of Bush have effectively helped end that.  His accusing them of being one of the Axis of Evil caused the years of diplomacy preceding him to be completely worthless.  Korea wouldn't help terrorists.  They barely talk to their best friends China.  Why the hell would they talk to Osama Bin Laden?

Still, there's no denying that they are a bit of a pain.  They refuse to talk to anyone, and refuse to allow anyone in really.  And it seems that they may be about to restart the fighting.  With Soel, the captial of South Korea, along with Inchon - former US base and airstrip and now the International Airport for Korea -  within a few miles of the border, and well within artillery range of the North, any attack would instantly cause thousands if not millons of deaths and destroy 50 years of growth in South Korea that has seen it jump to 24th richest economy in the world (ref:http://www.economywatch.com/world_economy/south-korea/).

The options available are few and far between.  If the North refuses to talk, or listen, then the options are even further reduced.  You could put further sanctions on the country.  Which is what is likely to happen.  But the downside to this is first, that they have threatened to attack if that happens, and secondly, the only people that hurts are the poorest in the country.  The other is a pre-eptive strike.  Which again will only hurt civilians and could lead to another bitter, costly, drawn out war.  Not what any country needs at the moment with the Economic situation as it is.

One possibly solution would be to use Nuclear Weapons again for the first time in 64 years.  But this would cause untold casualties, receive worldwide condemnation and produce a fallout that many in South Korea, China and Japan would suffer for years to come.  Not really an option then is it?

Diplomacy is the best option, but you need to get Kim to the tables.  Perhaps reducing the current sanctions, give them more aid and see what happens.  Stop all this bollocks about nuclear disarment.  You can't have Nukes yourself and say to everyone else you cant have them, besides, North Korea wont talk if you keep giving them ultimatums.  Get them talking first THEN ask to stop making nukes.  That's the only way to do this!
