No time for a full-capped SPN review this week. It's a beautiful, beautiful weekend, with the loveliest autumn-weather you can imagine, warm and crisp at the same time. One of the best things about living in Sweden - and something quite unique - is the fact that there's a general rule that says everyone has the right to access all land, with some exceptions and some rules to obey. But this means everyone has access to the woods, the fields, the shores etc, and it's something many Swedes use. At this time of year many of us love going out in the woods to pick mushrooms and berries, for instance. I was out yesterday and we found a LOT of mushrooms! It's such a thrill. Not to mention completely therapeutic, since it's so quiet and lovely in the forest, filled with all this wonderful things that taste fantastic.
I think this was another good one. I love the premise; people fighting for no reason at all. It wasn't deep, but it's quite a good allegory for how stupid wars usually are, how pointless and destructive. It was really a rather sad episode, in more ways than one. The whole Sam & Dean thing was horribly depressing. I love how Dean has this look of intense indecision throughout, how he was obviously very torn between keeping things normal between them, and sticking to his resolve.
On the lighter side, Dean's bafflement at Castiel's proclamation that he's going to find god, is hilarious. 'Try New Mexico, I hear he's on a tortilla.'
And I love Castiel's lacking sense of humour and understanding sarcasm (something he'll have to learn, slowly, I'm guessing): 'He is not on any flatbread'. Haha!
Equally nice was the explanation we've been waiting for forever, for the significance of Dean's amulet (apart from the fact that Sam gave it to him). Even if I'm quite sure that Kripke & co didn't intend for this explanation to begin with. It's lovely to see how much it really means to Dean, what it represents to him (Sam!).
And poor Bobby! I'm sure he'll get better, but even as it's sad that he's in a wheelchair, he's also kind of funny when he's this bitter. 'If you find god, tell him to send legs!'
So, Kripke promised us the Apocalypse, and so far I'm intrigued. Sam & Dean entering a deserted town, with 'Spirit in the sky' playing (I'm so glad they're obviously putting at least some money on music, again!) has a very nice, haunting mood. I do wonder how many people were killed in that town. A lot I'm guessing.
Sam, Jo & Rufus, all back! That's cool, it's rather nice to have familiar faces back now again, instead of constant, new guest stars you never get to know.
And there's the whole Sam and the demons and their blood thing. Like I said, SAD. The scene in the store, was tragic. The look on Sam's face, the look on Dean's. Such sadness.
I'm not quite sure what made Dean hesitate and turn around when he started off to go save Sam, and then stopped and decided on a plan. Maybe it was just sense, but it seemed to be related to his problems with Sam. It seemed that his gut instinct told him to SAVE SAM - because that is Dean's mantra in these situations - but that his brain told him that he can't be guided by that anymore, because of what Sam did. It just seemed to sad to me. Like he said in the final scene: 'I spend more time worrying about you, than doing the job right.'
And Sam KNOWS he's a mess, poor boy. Such a mess.
In the whole episode, Sam keeps a few steps behind Dean, probably on his own decision as well as Dean's. It pre-shadows Sam's decision to go away for a while, to keep out of Dean's way, to stay away from hunting. Sam's feeling of self-worth is shot to the ground, he needs to find his focus, his feet, again. And to make Dean trust him again. The final scene is so sad; Sam's troubled forehead (but man, his hair is a MESS! Is it on purpose, to show he doesn't really care about such things?) and Dean's resignation. It seems Dean had already come to same conclusion as Sam. The way he looks at Sam as he's leaving, is heartbreaking.
Ending on a shallow note. Dean looked spectacularly pretty this episode. I think it's due to the natural light they were using, where his lovely freckles show. It makes him look beautiful.
So yeah, another good one. Both for setting up future storylines and for having an intriguing one on its own. And I believe it won't be long until Sam & Dean won't be able to stay apart. I hope! They just have to regroup a bit.
