Frick. Now this seems like a perfectly practical way to deal with a situation in a time when divorce was illegal or extremely onerous.
The "wife sales" made famous in Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge were, in reality, English rural-folk divorces in which the participants knew one another, and the wife being "sold" was often already sleeping with her "buyer."
But all I can think is I shoulda got some fucking money out of it!
