I'm finally having a good time up here!
Steph and I have been meaning to go to a comic convention since...forever. We always seemed to miss the ones (one?) in Arizona because we were either busy/lazy or it was too hot. Since the Northwest contains a lot of nerds we were guaranteed to find several conventions, and we jumped on the chance to attend the Emerald City ComiCon. We bought tickets with Robyn months ago, but unfortunately neither of them could make it because they had other obligations. So, Evan got a free ticket and I drove up to Seattle by myself.
I didn't really know what I wanted to do. Some of the panels looked interesting but I mostly wanted to meet some of my favorite artists and didn't really think past that. We didn't end up going to any of the panels because we were having more fun meeting people and spending Steph's money (she wanted us to buy stuff for her).
I had a major case of shyness going on. There's something weird about meeting the people whose comics you've been reading for years. You know a lot about them, but they know nothing about you. Sometimes you know what they look like, or you've read what they've had to say about their lives, and suddenly you're talking to them. It's weird! It's like you've been spying on them through a one-way mirror.
Luckily, everyone was really nice. Here are some highlights and pictures:
-Shaking hands with Angus Oblong (The creator of
The Oblongs) - he was wearing clown make-up and came right over to talk to us. The other people at his table were really friendly too.
-Meeting Jeff Jacques of
Questionable Content fame - he was super nice and polite. It was almost a surreal moment. I could barely find anything to say to him and he didn't give me any dirty looks. He also drew me a sketch of Marigold. Adorable!
-Standing in a really long line to meet Jhonen Vasquez. There were two sessions and we just barely missed the first line cut off. We came back later and barely made the second one! He was nice but again I could hardly bring myself to say anything. Luckily Evan saved me - he started chatting with Vasquez, and then got a picture of me standing next to him:
-Meeting Ben Costa - my favorite part! He writes
Shi Long Pang and was super nice to me even though I was SO NERVOUS for some reason, tripping over my words and/or hardly saying anything. So awesome. Read his comic!
-Being asked to get something signed by Vasquez for someone who missed the line cut off (Evan took pity on the guy and did it)
-Going back to see Ben Costa to get another picture with him. In the first one I was making a weird face. Of course I could not let that stand so I went back and asked him to pose again. Here is the more-awesome picture:
-Seeing part of Leonard Nimoy's face from the side! We did not see his body.
-Picking up Jellyfist by Vasquez and Jenny Goldberg and then finding out that Goldberg is THERE right next to Vasquez signing stuff too. She drew me a kitty!
-Making friends with the woman who had to control the Vasquez lines. People were going crazy with rage at the thought of not getting a signature! We cheered her up though. Here's Evan posing with her:
-Buying Flaccid Badger and other mini comics for a dollar each. So cute!
-Seeing all the people playing at the Magic tables. If only I knew how to play! And had a lot more time.
and last but not least
-Hanging out at Evan's place afterward to watch cartoons and drink copious amounts of red wine.
Nerds rule.
