Present day:

“NINO!”

He looked up in alarm just in time to see Aiba nearly run over a pair of flight attendants as he crashed towards him in his usual hurricane of happy. It was all he could do not to turn and run, but he managed to brace himself somewhat before Aiba attacked him in what could have been a bear hug, but was more like attempted murder.

“Aiba-” Nino choked out, prying the large man’s arms from around his neck. “I need air!”

Jun chuckled, pulling Aiba away by the waist so that he could get a good look at the tired idol. “Hm… Nice hair Nino, it suits you.” He smirked and dodged a lazy punch. “Come here!” He enveloped him in a tight hug, heaving a sigh into his shoulder.

“It’s been tough…” He said quietly, so that nobody else could hear and he pulled away, a frown on his face. “You look thin.”

At that point Sho and Ohno arrived on scene, Sho still wearing his newscaster suit.

“Aw, guys c’mon, you didn’t all need to come! It’s only been two months…” Nino huffed, as Sho gave him a brotherly thump on the back.

“Woah, Jun’s right!” Sho muttered, eyeing Nino suspiciously. “You are thin...”

“S’nothing.” Nino muttered, pulling at the edge of his t-shirt. “I’ve just been busy, that’s all… Hey!” he added, seeing a nutrition rant coming. “I brought presents!”

Aiba gasped loudly, his mouth hanging open in feigned shock as Nino pulled a bag out of his suitcase and tossed it into his arms. “Help yourselves.”

And despite their ages Jun, Sho and Aiba all jumped at the bag, going through its contents like toddlers on Christmas morning. Nino glanced up at their leader, who was standing a little ways away from them all with his hands shoved deep in his pockets. He must have sensed Nino’s stare because he looked up then and gazed at him thoughtfully, his eyes drifting absentmindedly across his features.

He glanced over at the other three before walking up to Nino and wrapping his arms stiffly around his waist. “Welcome back…” He pulled away a little too soon and he spoke distantly, as if he was in a world of his own; which he probably was.

“Mm…” Nino muttered, feeling more than a little awkward at the reunion. “How have… things been? You know, with Arashi.”

“It’s been alright…”

He nodded, biting his tongue to hold back a sigh of relief as Jun spotted them and made his way over, holding one of the sequined key chains.

Nino’s heart gave an uncomfortable lurch and suddenly he didn’t want to be home alone that night. “Hey do you guys want to come over to my place for a while? I think I still have some beer in the fridge.”

Jun raised an eyebrow, eyeing the dark circles and pale skin. “Nino you’re jetlagged, shouldn’t you be going to bed…?”

Nino sighed and grabbed his suitcase, waving at Aiba and Sho with the other hand. “I’m fine Jun-kun! C’mon, I haven’t seen you all in months. We need to catch up.” He walked away, hooking arms with Aiba and Sho on his way to the airport’s exit.

Jun turned with a frown to Ohno, who smiled softly at him. “It’s fine Jun, I don’t mind.”

After a slight pause he nodded and put a comforting hand on Ohno’s shoulder as they followed the three into the night.

“Alright this is the third round, first one to finish the whole bottle and can still-“ He broke off in a hiccup. “-Can still stand up wins. Ne?”

They all grunted in agreement and Ohno handed out the bottles before he curled back up on the couch.

“Oh~-chan are you sure you want-ah, I mean don’t want to play~?” Aiba slurred, turning to the only sober man in the room with a pout.

“No, Aiba-chan I'm alright.” Ohno laughed halfheartedly, turning back to his lap to distract himself from his surroundings.

The shouts and loud laughter faded into the background and Ohno breathed a deep breath, glad to be back in the place where nobody could reach him. He let his thoughts drift and somehow all he could think of was the exact room they were in. Only now there was him and Nino, curled up on the couch with mugs of hot chocolate and a Christmas tree in the corner where the plasma-screen TV now stood. And then it was the night after a concert when it was all they could do to make it to the living room let alone the bedroom. They had just slept on the floor that night and had to make up excuses the next day as to why they both had back-pain. Then there was that week when he had gotten sick with the flu, and Nino insisted upon taking time off, telling their manager that his dog was sick. He stayed home with him and cooked what few dishes he knew how to, trying with the nervousness of a novice to nurse him back to health.

He couldn’t help but smile at the happy memories this apartment held, but all too soon the reality of the present re-settled and his smile disappeared. He breathed evenly through his nose and blinked, pulling himself from his thoughts and turning to find all four of them passed out on the floor.

“Aiba?” He sat up and took his responsibilities as the sober friend as he nudged the man with his foot, making him stir with a groan from his sleep. “Aiba, wake up!”

“M’whaa?” He croaked; one eye cracked open and peering at Ohno in annoyance.

“C’mon,” He helped the man to his feet and ended up having to sit him back down so as not to let him fall. “I’m going to call a cab for you guys, take Jun home and you can drop Sho off on the way, okay?”

He moaned, ruffling his hair and sticking his lip out. “Riida… I wa-wanna sleep here!”

He smiled gently but shook his head as he pulled Jun into a sitting position. “Nino is jetlagged, the last thing he needs is Aiba Masaki waking him up in the morning when he should be sleeping.”

It took almost twenty minutes of prodding and negotiating before he managed to usher the three out of the apartment. He was about to close the door again when Jun stuck his head in, a stern look on his face despite his drunken state.

“Ohno…” He pointed his finger at him, nearly poking him in the eye. “Don’ make me worry about… you.” he hiccupped and scratched his head thoughtfully, one eyelid drooping. “Ano… call me tomorrow okay~?”

Ohno nodded, watching Jun stumble his way back down the hall and wrap his arms around Aiba from behind. He closed the door and leaned against it for a moment, a small smile flickering across his lips before he straightened and walked back to the living room.

Nino was sprawled across the floor, one leg raised on the couch, the other buried in a pile of beer cans. He had a frown on his face, not unusual for him lately. As the older man watched, he stirred slightly, wrapping his arms around his waist in almost a hug and his brow pulled together.

Ohno swallowed and a sudden rush of memories hit him like a slap to the face as he closed his eyes, summoning up as much resolve as he could. He sighed and weaved his way over to where the idol was sleeping, careful not to step on any of the cans strewn across the carpet.

He scooped him up bridal style and staggered momentarily under the dead weight, the man probably weighed a grand total of ninety pounds, but even so, it was enough to make him break in a light sweat.

He managed to make his way into the bedroom, and he gently laid Nino down on the mattress. He huffed, regaining his breath before taking off his shoes and pulling the blankets up to cover him. “Nino…” He said softly, his fingers brushing over the bristles of his hair, his furrowed brow.

And suddenly their faces were inches apart, and Nino’s hand was firm on the back of his neck. His eyes were still closed but his lips parted slightly and Ohno’s heart raced.

“Oh-chan…” He slurred and Ohno blinked, unsure if he was asleep or not. “I’m… sorry…” He sounded upset and Ohno noticed with shock there were tear tracks across his cheeks.

“Nino…?” Ohno swallowed and brushed his thumb across his cheekbone, wiping the moisture from his face.

“I miss… you…” He sighed and rolled over, his arm falling limply across his chest.

Ohno paused, “Nino… are you awake?

No answer.

He took a deep breath and kicked off his shoes, climbing into the large bed and curling up around Nino’s small form, his hand finding Nino’s and threading their fingers together. “Just this once…” He breathed against Nino’s back, inhaling his comforting smell and putting it to memory. “Just this once and that’s all, I promise…” He propped himself up slightly so that he could drop a light kiss to the edge of Nino’s jaw, his lips grazing the skin across his cheek, his forehead, the down-turned edge of his lips.

He pulled away and took a shuddering breath, burying his face in Nino’s t-shirt and closing his eyes to stop the moisture forming there. “I miss you too Nino, I miss you too…”

He stayed like that until the sun broke through the curtains, and when Nino woke later that day with no memory of the words he’d spoken; Ohno was long gone.

‘I can’t love you more than I do,
And just by that, I feel complete…
So don’t cry, we can always meet again,
Whenever we close our eyes…’
