Today at around two in the afternoon I was sleeping peacefully in bed, as my wonky circadian rhythm demanded. My alarm radio was going off and had been for about a half hour. I just received the news that Robert H., the man who is my stepfather by all but legal marriage, has died of a stroke. He was a gentle man who loved to restore antique furniture and he helped raise my little sister. He made my mother very happy.

Please pray for my family.

I haven't got much time right now--it's finals week and I'm scrambling to finish some math at the moment--but I just had to post this link.

Parents of autistics, and families who are caretakers for disabled people in general, aren't supported nearly enough. They often have to advocate pretty hard to get the assistance they need; and in some cases they may never be able to get it.

There's a lot of talk about how stressful it is to raise a child with autism; how the parents grieve because the child is not neurotypical. From the autism community, the response seems to be to blame the parent for that attitude. I wrote this at age 15. I believe it was part of an attempt to bring some order into my chaotic family life, and to get my parents to be more predictable. Needless to say, the response was something like, "Yes, yes, that's nice--now go do the dishes."
