--Stuart had his periodontal appointment on Tuesday. Three days of liquid diet, followed by four days of only soft food. He gets the other side of his mouth done next Tuesday, dietary restrictions repeated. Tomorrow is the first day he is allowed pseudo-solid food, and he said he is sadly excited to have instant grits or instant oatmeal or whatever mush gets thrown in the microwave. Tuesday evening I made Potato Leek Soup for dinner. I thought about doing the whole weird diet thing with him--as a show of solidarity/easy way to drop a couple pounds--but by Tuesday afternoon I was ready to chew food. Tonight I made Garlic, Cheddar, and India Pale Ale Soup. Probably the most decadent thing I've made since the Cheese and Tomato Pie of this summer. This soup had two and a quarter pounds of cheddar. And almost four bulbs of garlic. It was insanely delicious, but it was so rich I could only tolerate a very small bowl.
--Louisville is finally getting a
Trader Joe's. Can't buy too much food right now (see above) but I plan to go tomorrow and explore anyway. The nearest one was Cincinnati, so I only got to go on the rare occasion I was up there with a couple hours to kill. 2 Buck Chuck is mine!
--Small progress in the writing department. But some is better than none. I blame the filthy house--hard to find my happy, quiet place when everywhere I look are dust bunnies and clutter and dirty dishes. Scout had an orthodontist and two physical therapy appointments this week, meaning my afternoon which is usually all mine until 3, was broken up three days by going downtown to pick her up from school, then hauling ass to various locations. Yesterday and today I cleaned; I'm hoping the peace of having a nice living space will translate into good headspace for knocking out two thousand words. Scout is staying after school to help decorate for the middle school Halloween party, so I have all day with no known interruptions. If I can get that done, then it's editing over the weekend and this story will be finished!
--I finished The Name of the Wind yesterday. I don't know what I think of it. Will probably post a more complete review one of these days...I think I meant to do one for the Gentlemen Bastards by now. Reviews can wait until fic is done. I started The Story of Edgar Sawtelle today--I think I needed a break from the steady diet of Fantasy I was consuming. So far (fifteen or so pages in) the writing has blown me away. Effortless description of place and evoking a mood. And I haven't even met the main characters yet. That this is a first novel makes my head spin. I'm going to try not to jump into it for a few days, until my story is done. Already though I'm itching to grab the Nook and make an hour disappear.
--Stuart and I went to Peter Searcy's annual Halloween party last week. I dressed up like one of the Crazy 88 from Kill Bill. Stuart, who only wears comfortable costumes, went as a Fight Club dude (jeans and a t-shirt, a scant amount of make-up and a few butterfly bandages) . He looked good--at the liquor store on the way there, the clerk thought his black eye was real. This weekend I'm not sure if we are doing anything. I kinda want to hole up and write. But a friend's band is playing on Saturday as part of an
INXS tribute. I wasn't that into them (goth girl) but it would be fun and I know the girls would be into going if there aren't kid Halloween things...though the "80s costumes encouraged" almost scares me away.
--I watched Monday's episode of Castle while on the treadmill this morning, and it was awesome. This season has had such fun episodes. I can't pinpoint when it happened, but The Office is no longer funny and I feel like it has been that way for some time--before Michael Scott left, but now that he's gone, the show just doesn't even have a reason to exist.
--I guess that's about it. And from most of the active posters on the F-List, a Halloween meme:
In honor of Halloween/All Hallow's Eve, I'm inviting
trick-or-treaters to my 'door.' Comment "trick-or-treat" to this post
and you'll get... something. Treats can be anything that strikes my
fancy (pics of fave actors or pairings, short fics, graphics, a few
words why I'm glad to have you on my flist, etc. etc.).
By the way: the more "houses" to visit the more fun it'll be, so go ahead, open your journal and help spread the fun!
Catch you all later!
