Well, the original Vocaloid software isn't (and supposedly it's expensive) but there's a freeware sort of equivalent, UTAU, with a bunch of fanmade voices and stuff that are really good too. But... I don't think that's open source, either.

Why is everyone obsessed with things being open-source nowadays? >_> There was even this guy in one of my classes at school who absolutely refused to use anything at all that wasn't completely open-source...

Never heard of Ruko o-o An UTAUloid, I'm guessing?

Also... you realize this post is from almost 4 months ago? I haven't updated in quite a while, heh >_>

I specialize in necroreplying.

Ruko Yokune is an UTAUloid, one of the few of the Vocautawhateverloids that I like... she's also a futa, which is my closet fetish thanks to 4Chan. I think she's cute.

So I guess you could call her a FUTAUloid, then, huh? :D *shot*

I'ven't heard many UTAUloids. Just the official Vocaloids and Kasane Teto, really... got any good songs of hers to suggest? :o

lulz

I think one of her songs is Reactor Core Somethingorother. I typically like to make auto-tune jokes about her. (since really, a vocaloid sounds an awful lot like a pop singer abusing autotune)

Eh, it all depends on who's using 'em, really. There are a lot of good Vocaloid (and UTAUloid, even) songs that you really can't tell the difference between the software and a human voice. All of ryo's stuff that I've heard is awesome, too :o

I've heard some good ones, but they've still got the "autotune abuse" sound going on. (...granted, I'm a broadcasting graduate, so I tend to be able to hear vocal/sound effects better than other people)

You can't beat Teto's Poker Face

The interesting thing about Miku is that they don't market her like a cute mascot; but rather as a living, breathing pop star. She's even had "concerts" in Japan. I forgot how they did them, exactly... I know one was just basically a live band with her being animated on a screen ... I think there might have been one involving a holographic Miku - or else I was hallucinating when I saw that video. There's comic books detailing the adventures of her and her friends (the other vocaloids that were released after her), and other merchandise. She's also got a massive fan following.

It's very interesting from a sociological angle: Popular musicians and bands are so manufactured and reliant on auto-tune and vocal effects that they don't even need to be real any more.

Maybe soon I'll be able to program a band using Java. ^.^

(Hey, Chaos! I'm learning it too!)
