“Don’t be ridiculous, Wade. No one orders 300 doses of bottled magic for research purposes,” Serina told her, moving around the group of Watchmen to tidy her shop.
It was a lovely place, Nettles thought. Two stories tall and lined with floor-to-ceiling wooden shelves packed with jars and vials of varying sizes, shapes, and materials. If they hadn’t just entered from the overcast outside, most would have assumed the ceiling was one massive skylight given how much bright, pure light it cast on the shop but Nettles knew better anyway. Natural light degraded the magic inherent in most herbs so apothecaries tended to rely on magic forms of illumination. The ‘skylight’ was a clever enchantment and must have set Serina back a few hundred gold Eagles.
“How much bottled magic do you have on-site?” Wade asked gently.
“A dose and a half, roughly.”
“Legally imported?”
“Hardly,” Serina answered, shaking her head. “It’s expensive enough without adding trade tariffs into the mix. “
Nettles raised an eyebrow at her easy admission to being involved in smuggling a substance that questionable and Serina just smiled at him and straightened a row of jewel-tone flasks.
“How’d you acquire it?” Kierra inquired.
“Three years ago, when I went North to find a poppy supplier, I met an Imperial Apo who does an under-the-table trade in bottled magic. I bought five vials.”
“And you have almost two left?” Nettles asked.
“I’d have more but I gave one vial as a gift.” Serina shrugged.
Nettles nodded. “What did you use the others for?”
“She’s not using, she’s studying it,” Kierra told him.
“Studying?” he asked, frowning uneasily.
“If I could synthesize it, it’d give Riverford a considerable strategic advantage over its neighbors,” Serina explained, smiling sweetly.
"By which she means we could drive back our enemies and have them scared to return to this region of the Known World until the end of days.
