Four months and twenty-four days till I go to Phantom!
Wow! I can't wait! I'm already on cloud 9!
Unfortunately, I'm also already driving my poor Mom nuts. Not that she's not a Phan or anything, she is in the sense that she enjoys Phantom and has a deep appreciation for the story on all it's many levels. But she's not obsessed and addicted like I am. She's not counting the days and even the hours like I am till it comes back and we go see it. Ga! and she likes Raoul! She thinks that Christine and Raoul make a sweet couple! Ew! I mean, in many ways he's a nice guy, and I can see why Christine made the choice she did. Raoul is what you go for if you're looking for safe, dependable and handsome. But still, Ew! She can have him and leave the Phantom for me!
On that note. I have absolutely got to get hold of the French soundtrack, or more specifically the soundtrack to the French dub on the Canadian DVD if one has been released. God I hope one has! It is awesome! At first I didn't like the Phantom and I thought the Christine lost her, until that point amazing, stage presence in the second half. But on second viewing I don't think so. I was able to pick up more of what they were saying this time and why they sang things the way they did made more sense. Obviously, the wording is a little different than in English and sometimes the important word in the sentence falls on a different note in the musical phrase. And the Christine has a seriously amazing voice! OMG! I think I like her even better than Emma Rossem and that is saying something! While her voice is just as small and pure as Rossem's, she sings Christine as much more of a girl coming into womanhood rather than a girl who's still twelve at heart. She puts back much of the ambiguity regarding Christine's feelings for the Phantom too, especially in the title song, which I like being a confirmed believer that Christine should have chosen the Phantom.
And I love the translation! It seems weaker than the English lyrics in a few places, but on the whole it's amazing! I'm absolutely in awe of the French version of the title song, especially the way she sings it, and of what I can make out of the words to Music of the Night. I've learnt Christine's part to the title song in French and I'm dying to learn it as well. And Point of No Return? Yikes! Let's just say that, if the English words are rated PG13, the French lyrics take the rating up to M, and no, I'm not going to translate! Some of Carlotta's and the managers' lines too are even funnier in French than in English.
And the Carlotta? Oh my... The woman who sings Carlotta in English, inspite of being a bit over-operatic, actually has a very good voice though I hate to admit it. It's the bitch-diva atitude she portrays that makes the character so aweful. But the woman who sings it in French? Woah! She plays the diva-bitch atitude as well, sometimes even more so than the English, with a speaking voice that sounds like the Wicked Witch of the West I kid you not. But her singing voice? Holy Hannah! First of all, she sings with such a prevalent vibrato that it almost makes her pitch unclear; and second of all, she hits some truely cringeworthy notes, especially in the Hannibal, Notes/Prima Donna and Il Muto scenes. What makes it so funny though, other than the sheer awefulness of some of those notes, is that I have heard some opera-singers who really do sound like that!
Anyway, on another note, Mom very kindly succeeded in cleaning the jam out of my keyboard last night, so typing is now much easier. Thank goodness, and thanks Mom!
And what the hell is the industrial plant, or whatever it is, across the street doing? God! Their smokestack was spewing so loudly up to a moment ago that I almost couldn't hear my computer!
