When all of Grandma's chickens got attacked and killed during Christmas, I was terrified she was going to go into a deep depression. She had become a little bit obsessed with the care of her chickens. One time I told her they were nothing but some dumb animals and she nearly hit me. So the next day we went out and bought a new well made coop, and some baby chicks. We raised them for a few weeks in the house and then put them outside. Here they are - full grown. They aren't producing eggs yet, but they'll get there soon.
There's six of them, and I haven't named any except for this one. I named her Big Bitch (which my friends find endlessly entertaining). Phuong seems somewhat mortified by the name whenever I say it.
The reason I named her Big Bitch is because that's exactly what she is. She's mean and aggressive with the other chickens, and definitely at the top of the pecking order. She's the only one that tries to actively escape the coop and puts up huge fights whenever I try to put her back in. God forbid you put your shoe anywhere near her...her feathers expand, and she puffs out her chest going into cockfight mode. We keep wondering if we accidentally got a rooster. We haven't heard her crow yet. I'm not sure what to do if she does turn out to be a male because those are illegal in our city.
I was trying to get a picture of the other hens, but Big Bitch decided she had to fly directly in front of my camera. She really likes to put herself between me and the rest of the hens. Luckily the camera only caught the tip of her wings.
Big Bitch again - she's trying to protect/establish dominance over the other hens when I turned the camera lens towards them.
For the record - I refer to her as Big Bird in front of children. Except last week we had a group of people over for homemade pizza night. One of our friends brought her 11 year old cousin, and I sorta forgot to say "Big Bird" instead of "Big Bitch" after a beer or two. It was 1 am, and the child probably knew all the curse words anyways.
