Boom! Crack! Thud! Swish! Splash!

It’s been three weeks since Chie was marked and engaged to Junsu and it sounded like a storm was brewing in the woods between Flamme Heilen and Eaux Protecteur’s village. Though some of the people inside Flamme Heilen village, especially the ones visiting, looked warily at the woods, most of the others just ignored the commotion and continued on to what they were doing as if it was a normal occurrence.

“They’re at it again, huh?” The storekeeper asked Chie and Junsu as they passed by her shop. “Gotta hand it to Changmin, he never gives up.”

They looked to the woods as they answered, “Yup.”

In the woods, Changmin stood panting ten feet away from Chiharu. Chiharu just stared back at him with a blank look, taking deep breaths. About one year and six months ago, she stood at the same place, in the same situation and didn’t even break a sweat. These days though it was different. Although she was getting stronger, so was Changmin, and each time they fought it was getting harder to beat him.

She felt a ring of air surround her and created a shield of water just in time before the air could catch her. She expelled the water away from her, turning them into ice in the form of arrows.

Changmin created a shield of air and was able to block most of the arrows, except one that pierced his left upper arm.

“Ah.” He groaned. “What the?!” He exclaimed as he watched the ice spread from the arrow to his entire arm fast. He blast hot air on his arm several times but was only able to vaporize a small amount. Suddenly, the arrow turned back into water and his arm wasn’t being frozen anymore. When he looked up though to where Chiharu was standing, she was gone. She had escaped him again. He growled in frustation and laid down on the ground.

“Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. You should really get her soon Min-ah. The poor trees .” Jaejoong said from above Changmin, surveying all the trees that were felled during the fight.

“Shut up hyung. Try fighting her and see if she’s easy to beat.” Changmin replied.

“Not on your life.” Jaejoong retorted as he stood between the fallen trees. He bent is knees a bit and closed his eyes preparing to revive the trees.

Changmin shook his head, got up and away from Jaejoong as soon as possible. Things tended to get messy when Jaejoong tried to revive trees because reviving or healing is not Jaejoong’s specialty. He was a warrior type earth wielder, not a healer. He tries his best anyway.

Meanwhile, Chiharu arrived just in time for her shift at Faszinieren Lassen which was currently located Flame Heilen starting that day and for the rest of the week. Faszinieren Lassen is one of the water country’s most beautiful and profitable businesses, and the type that traveled a lot. It was an ocean park managed by the Eaux Merveilleux clan of the water country, the people of Eaux Merveilleux, were all entertainer type wielders. Chiharu was one of the few from Eaux Protecteur who were given the privilege to work in Faszinieren Lassen, since all of her clansmen were warrior types, including herself.

“Been in a fight with Changmin again?” Donghae, a colleague, asked as she passed by him.

She chuckled. “How can you tell?”

“Well, you’re a little out of breath, you look windblown, a certain sadness is in your eyes- one mind you that’s always lingers everytime you fight him.”

“Are you a shrink or something?”

“Or something. Anyway, get ready. Coolwater’s getting a bit riled, she senses you’re here.” Coolwater was one of the dolphins that she trained, and was her favorite. She hurried to the dressing room and changed into her wet suit.

On her way to the pool, a memory of day before her 20th birthday came back to her.

She and her family had been attending a birthday party of one of the Shim’s daughters. It was the first time she saw Changmin, and she was immediately smitten by him. He was handsome, charming, smart, and more. He had asked her to dance with him that night. She liked the feeling she had when she was in his arms. She felt free and happy. She knew that if she ever let anyone win against her on her 20th birthday, it would be this man. But, she had been wrong.

Whilst the party was still ongoing, she had wandered inside the house looking for the restroom. As she was about to pass a room which door was slightly ajar, she heard Changmin’s voice. It wasn’t her intention to eavesdrop, but when she heard her name she couldn’t help it.

“So, you will be going for Morisato’s daughter Chiharu.” Changmin’s father stated rather than asked. “She will be good for you, a warrior and a perfect hostess. Her family will also be a good ally. I suspect though that many will go for her, so you have to get her first.”

Chiharu would have been flattered to have Mr. Shim’s approval if he hadn’t been so obvious in wanting an alliance so much, and if he hadn’t talked about her like she was some commodity to be acquired.

“No.” Changmin replied, making Chiharu tense. She didn’t know whether to be hurt that he didn’t want her or be relieved that he wouldn’t just blindly obey his father.

“This is not negotiable son. You will marry her so we can get the alliance with the Morisato’s.”

“Yes father…”

It seemed Changmin said something else but Chiharu didn’t want to stay and listen to anymore, so she headed back out to the party.

SPLASH!

A spray of water hit her square on the face and made her sputter in surprise. When she had her face and opened her eyes, she saw Coolwater splashing happily in the pool, obviously laughing at her.

“Coolwater.” She said in mock anger.

Coolwater just ducked under the water and splashed water on her again. Chiharu dived into the water and chased the dolphin. She caught her by the dorsal  fin when Donghae came in and ordered them to stop playing and start practicing.

Changmin went into his room panting, his left arm bloody. He went directly into his bathroom, took off his shirt and washed his wound.

“Tsk tsk tsk.”

He turned and found Yoochun leaning against his bathroom door.

“Shut up hyung.”

Yoochun walked toward Changmin, grabbed his wounded arm, puffed a breath on his left hand and slapped it on Changmin’s wound.

“Ah!”

“Take it like a man dude, your 22 for goodness sake.”

“You didn’t have to apply it so hard.”

Yoochun merely shrugged, and concentrated on healing Changmin.

“Still unsuccessful?” Yoochun asked.

“She’s hard to beat.”

“OF course she is. She ranked number one on their academy final exams, and passed their survival test with flying colors. She’s also the top choice of their elders for commander of their military.

Changmin sighed in frustration. He pushed Yoochun out of the bathroom when his arm was fully healed so he could shower.

As cool water cascaded down his body, he replayed his fight with Chiharu. Each and everytime they fought he was getting closer to winning. Each and everytime also, Chiharu’s eyes would have no expression whatsoever most of the time. He would notice a second or two when emotion would pass through her eyes. It was something like pain or desperation.

Is she so against being married to me?

By the time he finished his shower and got out into his room to change, he noticed that Yoochun had already changed his clothes and was looking out his window humming a tune.

“Why are you all dressed up?” He asked.

“We’re going to Faszinieren Lassen. They’re in Flamme Heilen starting tonight and for the rest of the week.”

“I’m tired hyung, you go watch them by yourself.”

“Fine, I’ll just tell you later how amazing Chiharu is with her dolphin Coolwater.”

“Wait…What?”

“I know you heard me and you know I hate repeating myself. So, if you want to come with me…Change. Now.”

Changmin and Yoochun arrived at Faszinieren Lassen just as the show started. First off was Donghae with his killer whale Black Lightning, followed by some of the other performers. They created loops made of water in mid-air, making their partner dolphin, killer whale and penguins’ jumps through it. Others performed synchronized swimming along with their abilities as they created water fountains in the air. When Chiharu came out, she created a slide made of water in the air and rode it alongside her dolphin Coolwater. Changmin watched in awe and fascination as Chiharu manipulated the water so effortlessly.

“What’s got you gawking Min? Her performance or her in that little navy blue bikini?” Yoochun teased.

In the middle of her performance, a very strong wind blew through the park and straight into the water, creating a big splash. Moments later a ball of air emerged from the water with Chiharu caught inside it.

Chiharu looked up to one of the windows of the park and saw a man she had once come across four days ago. His name was Minwoo, an air wielder; and as she is discovering, a strong one.

“Hisashiburi Morisato Chiharu.” He said, as he floated in front of the air prison he made.

“What’s this about?” She asked.

“Well, I just found out today that you’re already 22 years old and still unclaimed. So, I decided to claim you for my wife.”

“And who says I’m willing? I don’t want to be tied to a jerk like you.”

“Ah, but I’m a very powerful jerk and I already have you.”

“Really now?” Suddenly as gush of water rose from the pool and pierced the air prison she was in. The tiny stream of water grew bigger quickly and she wasted no time in jumping through it and escaped into the water.

What nobody expected was, Minwoo dove into the water after her catching her off guard and capturing her easily once again. He flew back up out of the water with her in his arms. He created a ball of air around her head, limiting the amount of oxygen she could take.

“Oi!” Yoochun shouted as he hit Changmin in the head. “What do you think you’re doing just sitting here and gaping at them? He’s going to mark her anytime now.”

That woke Changmin up from his stupefied state, and watched as Minwoo’s lip got closer to Chiharu’s to mark her. He sent a blast of wind in their direction, taking Minwoo by surprise. Chiharu didn’t waste those precious milliseconds wherein Minwoo’s hold on her loosened. She turned herself into water and was able to escape his hold on her.

“Who did that?!” Minwoo roared. His eyes narrowed when he turned to find Changmin’s hand still outstretched.

“She’s MINE.” Changmin declared.

“Oh? How come she doesn’t seem inclined to be marked by you? I saw your fight earlier. Besides, she’s fair game. She’s over the age that she should have been claimed. Since you seem to be having a hard time doing it, I’m stepping in and trying my luck.”

“She’s MINE.” Changmin said again. “I may not have marked her yet but she has been mine since she turned 20.”

“No, she’s mine now.” Saying this, Minwoo swooped down to where he spotted Chiharu catching her unaware again as she was still trying to catch her breath. He quickly kissed her on the lips to mark her.

“Nooooooooooooo!!!” Changmin shouted. He charged toward them but was cut of short when Minwoo pulled back from kissing her, a confused look on his face. He kissed her again and again, but still nothing happened. He couldn’t understand why he couldn’t mark her.

“I am not some commodity that can be owned.” Chiharu said from behind them. She was standing on a fountain of water. Suddenly, the Chiharu in Minwoo arms turned into water.

Changmin had never seen so much fury in her eyes before. She stepped her right leg back and bent her right knee, her left leg fully extended in front of her. She closed her eyes and moved both arms in a series of fluid arcs over her head and around her body. Two more fountains of water rose up from the pool and swirled around her body. Slowly they took the form of very fierce dragons, their eyes obsidian black. When she opened her eyes, they were obsidian black as well; you couldn’t see a hint of any other color.

“I hate it when people talk of me like I’m not a person.” She murmured quietly as she stood up straight again. Her water dragons stopped swirling around her and suddenly charged for the two men in front of her. Both were quick in creating a shield of air, but Minwoo was not quick enough. The dragon that went for him was able to take a bite of his arm, and before he could recover from the pain of it, the dragon came back and swallowed him whole. Minwoo was pulled into its watery body, in grave danger of drowning soon.

Changmin focused his attention on the dragon that was now charging for him again. He closed his eyes and squatted down. He punched open-palmed first his right, followed by a closed-fist left. He kicked both feet alternately high in the air, spun his right then left arm in a circle at his sides his left hand slapping the air he had created to stand on in midair; his right hand resting on his knee as he crouched down. When he opened his eyes they were smoky grey, you can’t see the pupils, all you see is smoke swirling in his eyes. Though invisible to the eyes, Changmin had created a scorching protection of hot air around him.

When the dragon opened its mouth to swallow him whole, he jumped straight into his mouth and flew quickly to where Chiharu was still standing. The water surrounding him couldn’t touch him thanks to his hot air protection. The part of the water dragon’s body that he was going through quickly evaporated as he flew through it.

When he broke through the dragon’s body, he was met by icicles meeting him, didn’t even bother to dodge them, they easily evaporated as soon as they touched the hot air around his body. He only removed his protective covering once he reached Chiharu. As soon as he caught her in his arms, he held her chin in a firm grip and kissed her. Magic exploded around them. Chiharu’s eyes returned to their normal ocean blue color, making her dragons disappear. Her long ash brown hair was lifted off her back as Changmin’s mark on her imprinted itself on her entire back. It was the shape of gray angel wings; it seemed to sprout slowly from the middle of her upper back and out. Chiharu’s mark on Changmin took the form of her water dragons. It started from his middle lower back, extending up to his upper arms.

Changmin broke the kiss once the marks were fully imprinted. When he opened his eyes and met her blue ones, he was shaken by the pain and confusion he read there. He felt his heart knot painfully when a single tear fell from her eyes.

“I don’t know whether I should be relieved or sad that you finally got me.” She said as she looked down to hide the stream of tears that she couldn’t stop flowing.

“Is it really so terrible to be my wife?” Changmin whispered.

She laughed mockingly, “Do you really want me as your wife? You were giving the impression that you just want me as a possession, as a trophy wife. You and your father just want an alliance with my family that’s why you never gave up going after me.”

Changmin could recall only one time when he and his father had that conversation. “You were there weren’t you?”

“Where?”

“Near the study on my sister’s birthday, you heard what I and my father talked about.”

Chiharu nodded. Realization dawned on Changmin, he finally understood why she always looked at him with a mixture of longing and anger.

“Did you listen to the whole conversation?”

She shook her head.

Changmin sighed. “Well, if you had you might have heard me say that yes, I will go for you regardless of what he wanted. I didn’t want you as a trophy wife. I don’t even care about the alliance. I just want you. I love you Morisato Chiharu. My relentless pursuit regardless of how bad I got hurt each and every time should have been proof enough, but I guess you had a different interpretation of it all.” Changmin tipped her chin up so he could stare into her eyes. “So now I’m setting you straight. I want you as my wife and not a possession because I love you. Do you understand? I LOVE YOU.”

Hope and joy started to bloom in Chiharu’s heart, but she suppressed it wanting to be sure it was all real. She looked into deep into his eyes. When she saw the sincerity and love in his eyes, she finally let her suppressed feelings go. Warmth emanated from her body and wrapped around Changmin, giving him the sense of coming home.

“I love you too Shim Changmin.”

MInwoo smiled at the sight of them in the air kissing as he got out of the water and went to Yoochun.

“Hey.” Yoochun greeted.

“Don’t hey me Chun. Those dragons of hers were nasty, you owe me big.”

“Yeah yeah yeah.”

Yoochun also looked up at Changmin and Chiharu. Finally the rivals for two years are together.
