Ladies and gentlemen, a respite from the usual bracketology for a very special entry: TIM DICKSON'S OSCAR REVUE!
A self-styled and self-acclaimed film buff and guru, Tim has seen all that has to be seen and researched this almost as maniacally as my fantasy football playing friends prepare for the draft (yes, I know they're already starting preparations now). Since I cannot fit all of his sterling analysis on my away message, I've decided to add it to an entry here! A round of applause is in order for Tim Dickson! :-)
Without further ado, here's Tim's quick picks!
Best Foreign Language Film
"My Pick: Waltz with Bashir, great animated film about the intersections of memory and history
Likely Winner: The Class, think Dangerous Minds or Stand and Deliver but in French"
Best Animated Feature
"I haven't seen any of these films and even I know WALL-E is going to win, lets mover on"
Best Adapted Screenplay
"I've seen all the nominees, but have read/seen none of the original works, so lets go with Frost/Nixon since I don't think it will win anything else and it does deserve to win something"
Best Original Screenplay
"I'll go with Milk here for the same reason as Frost/Nixon in the adapted category"
Best Supporting Actress
"Honestly, probably the hardest to predict this year, I have seen different predictions list all 5 nominees as winners, I've seen 4 of the performances, My pick would be Marisa Tomei in the Wrestler her performance as an aging stripper mirrors and compliments Rourke's so well, no idea who will actually win though but I'd bet on Viola Davis from Doubt, she definitly made the most of the little on-screen time she had (could split votes with fellow Doubt actress Amy Adams who was also fantastic)"
Best Supporting Actor
"Heath Ledger, an amazing performance very deserving of the award"
Best Actress
"I saw 3 of these performances and would give the award to Anne Hathaway, gripping performance as a recovering junkie coming home for her sister's wedding but the award is going to go to either Meryl Streep or Kate Winslet, my money is on Winslet as she had 2 great roles this year and the very end of Doubt kind of soured me on Streep's performance as a whole"
Best Actor
"I saw all 5 of these performances and they were all great but it comes down to 2, Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke, I think Rourke gets the trophy but Sean Penn was amazing as Harvey Milk, Rourke's comeback is just the better story, Richard Jenkins in The Visitor is the performance you probably didn't see but really should"
Best Director
"Danny Boyle from Slumdog Millionaire is both my choice and who will probably win, he did a great job tying that film together, using the game show motif to tie together the events in the life of Jamal, also the movie is paced well and the ending credit sequence is just fantastic"
Best Picture
"I spent over 13 hours Saturday watching these films, and its close, between Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button. I give Slumdog Millionaire the nod though for its classic story told in a fresh way in an exotic setting. Benjamin Button is a very movie movie, if that makes sense, it has the epic tale, the special effects, the love story, all nicely woven together. I've read some things about The Reader maybe getting a big push but I don't buy it, it wasn't bad but I couldn't place it over the other nominees"
Other Comments
"Everyone saying Dark Knight should be a best pic nominee, I see your points but I don't agree. It was a fantastic film, but the five nominees deal with sweeping emotional issues in very gripping ways. The moral choices presented in Dark Knight as very comicbook-y. Now I think this series could eventually produce the first super hero best picture nominee, but it will be hard."
My Overall Biggest Snubs
"Gran Torino: This was a fantastic film that should have been nominated for SOMETHING. The Wrestler should have gotten a few more nods, including a best picture nomination and best song (how do you leave out Bruce Springsteen, seriously?) Acting-wise the biggest snub was Rosemarie DeWitt in Rachel Getting Married for best supporting actress. She played Rachel and is the perfect compliment to Anne Hathaway's character."
