A few weeks ago Craig the guy who lives in the one bedroom flat underneath the flat I'm in mentioned that he sometimes hears a strange humming sort of sound at night and he wondered if I knew what it might be.
At the time I didn't have any ideas apart from maybe the clothes dryer which sometimes gets used in the evenings.
Then last week he came up to say that it was happening and could we try to work out what it was. Because the clothes dryer was not running at the time I had no idea what it might be. So we both went down to his flat and listened. I could not hear anything no matter how hard I tried to listen, he said that he could hear it as a low frequency pulsing. After a few minutes a gave up so asked my flatmate Josh to go have a listen. After about 5 minutes Josh came back and said that when he tried very hard he could just barely make out what could possibly be the hum from my office computer coming through the floor.
Craig said that it keeps him awake at night! Now my computer is in the office which is above his lounge, his bedroom is next to his study which is next to his lounge. What incredible hearing he must have!
I put my ear right next to my office computer and could hear a low frequency pulsing, not while seated at my desk next to the computer mind you. I cut out some chipboard the size of the base of the computer and put long screws in each corner for spiky feet, some speaker stands are built this way.
It has been a few days so I asked Craig if there had been any improvement. He says that the sound has gone away and he is now able to sleep at night!
