the day the corn stood still
by: ivy quihuis
the last tattered husk has been shucked.
cobs stand wearily, kernels in disarray.
they’ve given their all.
never before have so many sweet corn cobs stood together against a common enemy.
united stalks, working together, only to be vanquished.
the bitter smell of defeat permeates the field.
kernels, husks, and dignity have been strewn about the havoc-ridden tract.
shame infiltrates the kernels and hits them right in the cob.
they know that the battle is lost.
the sun dimly peeks out behind the barn.
amber rays gleam through the husks sullied by failure,
casting a tint of shine onto the downtrodden kernels.
cobs that once glimmered proudly in the sun,
now limping, shriveled bare
as dusk steals the day, they’re left in awe.
now this day that will go down as the day cobs fought back… and lost.
this is the day the corn stood still.
