Fear is learned. Children are not instinctively born fearing the dark. They absorb their surroundings as they grow and learn to fear the dark, but it is learned. You are right about the gas smell... If you are around it too long, it will give you a headache... thus prompting you to stay away from it. I am not sure if it is the danger of gas that keeps you away, or the headache that you get from smelling it. Thus, you are avoiding the gas to avoid the headache...making the headache the thing that you really fear... or pain itself. And on having instincts tied into your soul or your body... I am reluctant to say that it is your body.. and your soul. I mean... Your body really serves as your souls' outerwear, if you will, so experiencing things through your body has prompted your soul to create certain instincts.. I don't think that a soul alone, or a body alone, could in fact create instinct. I don't know if that makes any kind of mundane sense, but there it is.

see, i still think people are afraid of the dark by nature. it is unknown, it is not within our senses to fully comprehend... and humans natural fear the unknown.

i agree about the body being the soul's "outterwear", it is connected to us, we cannot deny it.
