this is my philosophy paper i am presenting on tonight. i wish i wouldn't have waited until monday to start this, i'm such a procrastinator. so not my best work, but i would love some feedback on the topic. anyways, here ya go!
(
recollection vs. clean slate )
i don't know if those traits are learned or not, i will give you that a dark ally looking dangerous is probably learned, but, children are afraid of the dark, in general. also, the smell of gas smells that way for a reason, to keep us away. i dunno if that counts as an instinct or not though.
locke definately has a more modern perspective, but i still think some stuff is innate. in my textbook, i read that one of the philosophers thought that your instincts are your connection to the "eternal" form/reality/god/whatever... and i agreed. unfortunately i couldn't find it again and i couldn't find anything on the internet either. but i think that's true, sometimes i'll let my instincts answer and later think it out and realize my instincts were right. or i'll look at my dvds for some reason on my way out the door and then later someone will want to watch dvds with me but won't have any. things like that, it's weird, but i find the more i trust my instincts, the better off i am. but that still leaves the arguement of whether or not my instincts are tied to my soul or my body... i digress.
but i agree about socrates, it is an old way of thinking, but he did have some insightful things to say, though reading through the meno was like reading a conversation with the chesire cat.
i was glad i could slip a lil operation ivy in there ;)

i agree about the body being the soul's "outterwear", it is connected to us, we cannot deny it.
