Herb Score passed away today and he will be missed by every Clevelander.
Score was rookie of the year in 1955 and even though his game was forever off after being beaned by a line drive in the eye in 1957 (another reason we hate the Yankees), he was still one of the best pitchers in baseball.
For the Boston peeps out there, in Spring Training of 1957, the Red Sox tried to buy him for 1 million dollars. That was an insane amount of money, especially since entire ball clubs were being sold for 4 million.
He had been with the Indians as either a player or announcer for over 6,000 games.
He was the voice of the Cleveland Indians for most of my lifetime, and I'll always remember him saying "check that" as he was correcting a gaff. He had a folksy way about him that you couldn't help but love.
