Mandatory math tests for McDonald's employees
Why would any corporation want to hire cashiers who can't do simple math without the aid of a calculator? People should be given a math test before they get jobs where they have to handle money. I'm not asking for Trigonometry or Calculus, or even Algebra here. I'm talking about simple math of the "one plus one equals two" variety. Here's a conversation I had today with a fast-food cashier named "Renee":
Me: I'd like a double cheeseburger and a side-salad.
Renee: That'll be $2.10.
Me: (handing her a $20 and digging in my purse for a dime) Here's $20, and oh, here's a dime...
Renee: (after prematurely punching the numbers in the computer) I already punched in $20.
Me: Its a dime, can't you figure it out?
Renee: uhhhhh....ok (digging in the drawer, and coming out with a handful of bills and change) Here's $17.80.
Me: Um, you see, the reason I gave you a dime was so that I wouldn't get a handful of change back...
Renee: But this is all the change I can give you. You don't get any more than this because you gave me (looks at receipt, shows it to me)...
Me: (giving the "you're a moron" look, and speaking VERY slowly) Yes, the bill was $2.10, I gave you $20.10. $20.10 minus $2.10 is $18.00.
Renee: (giving the look that morons give when they know they are wrong but just can't figure out why) Oh. Um. So you want $18.00 back, then?
Me: (speaking even more slowly and adding gestures when necessary for clarification) Uh-huh
Renee: (observing a moment of silence while this new information penetrates her brain)...Oh...Um...
Me: (nodding encouragingly, very slowly so as not to confuse the poor girl)
Renee: Oh ok (opens drawer and hands me a dollar bill, then stalks off in search of the food)
Me: (weeping internally for the utter, hopeless stupidity of 90% of the population) thank you!
How does someone that stupid survive, let alone get a job as a cashier? Apparently natural selection is broken.
