Some of your system spec is better than mine, btw!
My main system (other systems I have are older than this) ;
64-Bit AMD CPU @ 2Ghz
PCIe Video (nVidia Geforce 6200)
1GB Ram
2 Hard drives - 1x60GB (SATA), 1x20GB (IDE). IDE drive is removable.
(Also have 1x750GB USB HDD External).
Sound blaster live 256 PCI (The original SB Live card from years ago!)
DVD Writer
PCI Wireless network card
From what you've described the problems almost sound like bad software or maybe even bad memory (dud memory will always cause all kinds of weird and random problems, seen it before). Even worse if it's intermittent.
IHMO apart from supporting different CPUs or cards there's not *all* that much difference in motherboards these days. Not like the old QDI motherboards that if you put the clear CMOS jumper on and switched on the PC you blew the motherboard up(!).
If you can try to get all new bits 'n' pieces and try again :) . Also branded PCs tend to have *lots* of junk installed.
