archy and mehitabel

to hell with anything unrefined by cmshaw
Gen. Short one-shot. In which there are many people with causes, and Mehitabel has the soul of an artist. A series of verses in the style of the originals. This is splendid, all of my love for archy and mehitabel came rushing back as I read it. Just, so very well done, Mehitabel and the suffrage movement and the man with the anti-suffrage rose wife. (PG)

Greta/Bob Bryar. One-shot. High school AU. Greta is a sweet girl, okay, and she doesn't get why things keep happening to her. Ending up covered in egg in the presence of Bob Bryar, whom she's kind of had a crush on for forever, isn't even the end of what the world's throwing at her today. This fic is random and awesome, and Greta is so cute, and Bob is kind of aw-shucks thuggish and adorable when he blushes, and in general it's all the kind of charming that you can't turn down. (PG-13)

Sheepish Wolves (Just Don't Put Your Teeth on Me) by paperclipbitch
Vicky-T/Gabe. One-shot. Lonely werewolf girl falling into a crew at a new high school! I am so completely charmed. All the cameos are the best kind of pan-bandom self-indulgent. (PG-13)

Measured Out in Miles by zarathuse
Killjoys gen. Short one-shot. After the time Party Poison winds up bleeding and unconscious in the driver's seat and Kobra Kid's trying to tell Grace what pedals to climb into the footwell and push, they decide that she needs to learn to drive the Trans Am. There's some background Frank/Gerard, but this is very much Grace's story. I can't even express how much I love it. Grace's voice, and the way the world and the characters fit together, and the way Grace and Ray fit together within that, the details of their shared past, and just ... there is a lot in not much space and it's all absolutely my favourite version so far of the Killjoys 'verse. Also, I still have a little trouble remembering who everyone is, but the author does a great job of making it clear. (PG-13)

Hugs Gimme Hugs by jedusor
Killjoys gen. Ficlet. Another Grace-growing-up-with-the-Killjoys fic, though this one takes you all the way to the tragedy. I love Grace stories, and this one does the blow-this-shit-down touch of heartbreak really well. (PG-13)

What's Wrong With a Little Cheer by boweryd
Z/Ryan. Short one-shot. A little bit of fic about Z and Ryan on Christmas Day. Darling and faily and ridiculous; I'm stupidly fond of both of them here. (R)

Like All the Rest I Know by redbrickrose
Brendon & Charlotte gen. Ficlet. Charlotte goes to the show as a fuck-you; she can't imagine what made Brendon come. Oh my god, I love this Charlotte so much. This left me breathless and with my heart in my throat because I just ... oh man, Charlotte alone and Charlotte with Brendon, and By “terrorists” he totally meant Z, and whatever, Charlotte did not want the terrorists to win and she was always really bad at the high ground anyway. Fuck the high ground. Just seriously *__* (PG)

Diana Wynne Jones-verse

Fools Rush In by Rosie_Rues
Chrestomanci-verse, Angelica/Tonino. Novelette. Angelica Petrocchi, the worst spellmaker in Florence, isn’t sure what to think when a limply English young man turns up at her place of business talking about somebody called Tonino Montana. This is the best DWJ fic I’ve read. The spell, the DWJ-ish way the plot unfolds, and particularly this characterisation for grown-up Cat, Angelica and Tonino, are splendid. And the Angelica/Tonino is exactly as tucked-into-corners-but-perfect as a Diana Wynne Jones romantic arc needs to be. (G)

Growing Together by Katta
Ogre Downstairs gen. One-shot. There's something odd about the garden at the new house. A darling family story, with a good, on-tone voice. I particularly like Gwinny here. The Ogre Downstairs is my favourite under-appreciated Diana Wynne Jones, and good fic for it is the best. (G)

Brush Contact by Wild Iris
Chrestomanci-verse (Witch Week) gen. Short one-shot. Estelle Green’s rescue agent mother is in prison, and her cell has been broken up, but Estelle still holds herself ready, for the day she might be called on to help a witch escape. Witch Week is my least favourite of the Chrestomanci books, for the grimness of the world, and this is mostly a character portrait, preparation for the events of Witch Week rather than a story in itself - but I found the witch rescue cell perspective really interesting. I feel like Estelle’s voice adds something important to this world. (G)

Heyer-verse

Kissing Cousins by Brigdh
Various Cotillion pairings. Ficlet. Kitty's worried about Jack. Oh my gosh so charming and perfectly on-tone, and then the ending. Freddy is love. (PG-13)

A Gentleman of Taste by athousandwinds
Cotillion, Kitty/Freddy. Ficlet. Five telling moments in the lead-up to the wedding of Kitty Charing and Freddy Standen. Somewhat pointless, but endearingly charming and perfectly characterised. (G)

A Marriage of Inconvenience by sexybee
The Grand Sophy, Sophy/Charles. Ficlet. Sophy acts on a dare. I find Sophy and Charles one of Heyer's least satisfying romances, partly because Charles is so lacking in charm. But this ficlet managed to show their romance in a sweet and believable way - there's a great sense of the love and the push-and-pull between them. It also has some gentle hurt/comfort, of the bringing-them-soup style. (G)
