Chapter 9

“So you’ve found out my secret.”

Shige stood rooted in place as Pi drew nearer, a menacing smirk on his face.

“You…that’s…why?” Shige stammered, his heart pounding nervously.

“Why?” Pi asked, his eyebrow quirking as he smiled. “Because I want it that way.”

“But…but that’s Yuya! You can’t just…just…”

“Take him away from your Keiichiro?” Pi suggested, licking his lower lip as he stared at Shige.

Shige stared back, shocked. He knew. He knew and hadn’t…why hadn’t he…

“Of course I knew,” Pi said in calm fury. “I knew and I didn’t stop you. Do you know why? Because your secret “meetings” with that Keiichiro would make certain that Yuya was mine. If Keiichiro fell for you, he wouldn’t be a problem between me and Yuya. Understand? You were used. You are always used by me. So why don’t you run to your precious Keiichiro and comfort him? I don’t need you anymore.”

Shige took a tentative step back, then fled. Pi watched him, his cold arrogant expression breaking down into a weary one. He leaned against a wall to support himself.

“Pi, you should get some rest…” Massu said, stepping out of the shadows.

“Thanks Massu…do you think I said too much just now?”

“Shige’ll come around. He’ll be fine,” Massu said, and gently led his master away from Yuya’s room.

-------------------------------------------

“What should we do?” Hiroki asked Ryo softly.

“I don’t know! I don’t…I can’t imagine…” Ryo stopped when Hiroki placed a gentle hand on his shoulder. He shuddered as he took a deep breath. “We have to do something. Keiichiro’s neglecting his season. Things are starting to die.”

“Don’t worry about Kei. He’s got his own comfort,” Hiroki said. Ryo looked at him questioningly. “He met someone named Shige…need I say more?”

Ryo frowned. “Even if Kei’s fine, that doesn’t do anything about our situation. It’s time, Hiroki. We need to call a Council.”

“Yes, but wait. We should have Kei’s approval in order to do this,” Hiroki said.

Ryo punched his fist into his palm. “So it has come to this, Pi,” he said darkly.
-----------------------------------------
Shige found himself on Earth, clutching the soil.

“I can’t do this…I can’t…” he repeated over and over in anguish.

His mind held the image of Pi leaning over Yuya, the smirk and hatred in his eyes as he spoke to Shige…the hurt that would be in Kei’s eyes should he know the truth. But Shige had to tell him. If anything, that was the most important thing he needed to do but the last thing that he wanted to do.

Kei looked up when he heard Shige approach. He stared as he found traces of tears in the other’s eyes. He stood up and began to walk towards him but Shige stopped him.

“Wait…let me…let me say something first,” Shige pleaded. Kei nodded, confused. Shige took a deep breath before beginning. “I…I haven’t been honest with you. I’m not who you think I am. I’m not of this Earth. You…you’d be right to shun me after I’m done…” Shige stared at the ground, unable to look into Kei’s eyes. He didn’t want to see the accusatory look when he confessed his true identity. “I…I’m…”

Kei flung his arms around him and pulled him close. “You’re my Shige, and no one else’s,” he concluded, holding him tightly. “I love you,” he murmured before placing a soft kiss on the other’s lips.

They pulled apart, flushing but smiling. Kei pulled Shige down onto the grass.

“Let’s be honest with each other from now on, okay?”

Shige nodded and listened as Kei told him about being a Sylph and how he took care of the season of Spring. He wasn’t too surprised. Kei was too perfect to have been a normal human. But he was surprised to hear that Yuya was also a Sylph. If so, how was Yuya surviving in Pi’s lair?

When Kei was done, Shige began to tell him about what was going on in the Underworld. Kei’s eyes widened a little when he finally realized what Shige was, but listened patiently until the end.

“Yuya’s alive?” he gasped.

Shige nodded slowly. “I’m not sure what Pi plans to do with him, but yes, he is.”

Kei hugged him again. “I’m sorry Pi was using you like that. But…I’m not sorry I met you. I’m not sure I approve of your job but it’s inevitable isn’t it…everything must die at one point.”

Shige stood up. “I’ll bring Yuya back. I’ll defy Pi and get Yuya out of there. I promise,” he said.

Kei stared at him. “What? But you…what if Pi…”

“I have to try. Besides, who else can you trust, right? I owe you that much, at least. And I’m smart. I’ll be fine.”

“Just be careful…”

“I will. What could happen? I’m technically already dead, aren’t I?”

Chapter 10

Yuya felt himself roused from his sleep. He smiled, thinking that it was Pi, but was surprised to find an unfamiliar face peering at him. He shrank back instinctively.

“Who are you?”

“My name’s Shige and…well, there’s no time! I’m here to get you out of here,” the stranger said.

Yuya stared. Out of here? Meaning what? He was free?

“But…but Pi…”

“Never mind him. Come on, let’s go!” Shige urged.

Yuya blankly followed the other man out of the room.

“Wait. How do I know this isn’t a trap? Who are you? Are you trying to---”

“Look,” Shige hissed impatiently. “I’m Kei’s…friend. If you want proof, here,” he said, thrusting a small object towards the Sylph.

“Kei-chan’s ring!” Yuya said, recognizing the small delicate band that the other wore around his slender pinky.

“Now do you believe me? Anyways, I promised him that I would bring you back, okay? So follow me and don’t wander off! If Pi catches us, we’re dead! Get it?”

Yuya nodded, though he didn’t like the fact that he was leaving behind Pi’s back. Didn’t Massu and Notti say that Pi would free Yuya eventually anyways? But suddenly, he was eager to see his friends again, so those thoughts were pushed to the back of his head.

“And if I leave,” Yuya mumbled to himself, “Pi wouldn’t have to protect me anymore. He won’t have to die, because he can regain his energy…”

Shige led Yuya out of the dark palace into the dark city that lay beyond. Soon, they left behind the looming city and entered a sort of wasteland. Yuya struggled to keep up as Shige hurriedly walked on.

“Look, we’re almost there! Can you see the light?” Shige said excitedly, pointing. Yuya squinted and saw a sliver of light emerging from the darkness. Shige rushed on, forgetting that Yuya wasn’t as fast as he was.

Yuya stumbled and fell along the path. He felt someone grip his arm and he almost screamed when he looked up. A hooded person with an expressionless sunken face looked down at him. Yuya seemed to have lost his voice, unable to call to Shige for help.

“Do you want to save the person you love?” the hooded person hissed in a low tone.

The person I love…Yuya imagined Pi’s handsome face as they had kissed. But love? Yuya frowned. Pi loved him, but did he love Pi back? Was it all just fickle attraction, or did Yuya really have feelings for the dark Lord of the Underworld?

“I…”

“All you have to do is look into this magic pool and make your wish. Then it will be granted to you,” the person whispered enticingly.

“Well…I guess a wish can’t hurt,” Yuya said, edging toward the pool that was on the side of the path. He was surprised he hadn’t noticed it there, since it was so dark and alluring.

Shige turned around and his eyes widened. “Yuya, DON’T!!”

Yuya closed his eyes. “I wish---”

“Well, you better wish to live because you’ll need it!” the person cackled as he pushed Yuya with all his might.

Yuya screamed as he plummeted deep into the “pool”, which was more like a twister of slime.

Shige ran to the edge, staring inside. The hooded figure had long escaped, laughing evilly as he ran. Shige recognized him as the Underworld’s watchman, who tempted and tortured souls as he wished.

“What do I do now?” Shige whispered in terror.

--------------------

Pi sat up suddenly in bed. Something had jolted him out of his sleep. That voice…Yuya!

Massu was surprised when he saw Pi running down the corridor.

“Pi! You’re not well enough! What are you doing?!”

“Yuya’s in trouble! I need to save him!”

“But…you’re not---”

“I know, Massu. I know I’m not strong enough. But he needs me, and I can’t abandon him now. And I can try, if anything,” Pi said in a rush. He then changed forms and began to fly toward the place he had heard the scream.

Massu shook Notti awake.

“Pi’s gone after Yuya. We need to follow him,” he said urgently. He dragged the sluggish boy after him as he ran towards the direction Pi flew off to.

------------------

“Pi…” Shige breathed when he saw the winged figure approach rapidly.

“You,” Pi said accusingly, but he sounded more worried than angry.

“Yuya…he fell in,” Shige gestured toward the pool. “I-I couldn’t do anything…”

Pi barely heard him before diving straight into the pool.

“Where’s Pi and Yuya?!” Massu demanded when he and Notti reached Shige. Pale faced, Shige motioned toward the dark, murky pool. The three waited in dread for the outcome of this disaster.

-----------------

Yuya felt as if his soul was being sucked away from his body. He couldn’t really see, but thought his body was being torn apart.

“I want to live…I want to see Kei, Ryo, Hiroki…I want to see Tomohisa again!” he shouted in his mind. “I…I do have feelings for him. I don’t want to die!”

Pi could feel the strain on his body as he searched for the one he was looking for.

“Yuya,” he gasped as he reached for the seemingly lifeless Sylph. He pulled the smaller body toward himself, holding on, afraid that he’d lose him, lose him like last time.

Pi knew that they, and especially Pi himself, weren’t going to make it. Not like this. With his last surge of strength, he yanked the small pendent from around his own neck and crushed it his hand.

A surge of energy blasted through the pool. As the mist cleared, Shige, Notti, and Massu were able to make out the shape of Pi stumbling out of the now empty pool holding Yuya.

“Get…need light…” Pi gasped, falling to his knees.

Shige understood and turned to Massu and Notti. “We need to get them to Earth. Now.”

The three helped support the two until they reached the edge, where a shimmering barrier separated the land of the dead from the living. They could see the light-filled Earth through the veil-like shield. Shige staggered under the weight of Pi. He looked at Massu and Notti, who held Yuya between them.

“Look, I’ll take Pi through first. Then I’ll come back for Yuya, okay?” he said. Shige had made the pass through the barrier many time, escorting souls from Earth to their eternal home, but he had never had to escort anyone out. He took a deep breath before taking a determined step forward.

Shige blinked and realized that they had made it out fine. He laid the gasping Pi onto the soft green grass.

“Shige?” Kei said, rushing forward from where he had been waiting. His eyes widened in astonishment as he recognized the figure lying in front of him.

“Kei, wait here with Pi. I’m going back for Yuya,” Shige instructed, placing a soft kiss on the Sylph’s cheek.

Shige reentered the Underworld, shuddering for the first time at the difference between light and dark. He was surprised to find Yuya conscious.

“Where’s Tomohisa?” Yuya asked worriedly.

“I’ll take you to him now,” Shige said firmly.

“What do we do?” Notti asked as Shige helped Yuya stand up. He knew that this was as far as Massu and he could go.

“For now…stay here. I don’t know what will happen, now that Pi’s broken his pendant. He might not be able to return,” Shige replied grimly.

Massu and Notti exchanged frantic looks, but Shige had already reentered the barrier, this time carrying Yuya.

“Yuya!” Kei shouted, thrilled when Shige emerged from the shadows holding the Summer Sylph.

Yuya, however, barely heard him as he spotted the near-unconscious figure on the grass.

“Tomohisa!” he cried out as he took in the other’s state. Pi’s face was unusually pale and he seemed to be struggling to breathe.

“Kei-chan, Shige, he’s gonna die! What do I need to do?!” Yuya cried. He felt so guilty…this was all his fault! If Pi hadn’t come to save him…

Shige shook his head in disbelief as Kei tried to comfort the young Sylph. Pi couldn’t die. He wouldn’t…

Yuya suddenly realized what he had to do.

“I…I’ll give up being a Sylph so that he can live…” he whispered decisively.

Kei looked at him horrified. “No…Yuya, you can’t possibly…”

“I can and I will.”
