Chapter 11
The Sylphs’ household shook when Yuya uttered those words. Ryo and Hiroki were knocked to their feet.
“If ever a Sylph wishes to die, the rest shall immediately know,” Ryo muttered, remembering the old saying about Sylphs. He and Hiroki glanced at each other before immediately taking off.
------------------------------
“Yuya, wait!” Kei pleaded.
“If I wait, he’ll die!”
“But…”
“Yuya,” Pi groaned from where he lay. The young Sylph was at his side instantly.
“Tomohisa…” he mumbled, his eyes filling with tears. So much pain…so much hurt that he was unaccustomed to…
Shige took Kei’s hand. “Let’s give them time alone…”
Suddenly, Pi and Yuya were surrounded by a ring of flames, throwing Kei and Shige to the side.
“Yuya!” Kei shrieked, fighting against Shige’s firm hold.
“What’s going on?!” Ryo shouted as he and Hiroki arrived at the place where they stood. He glared at Shige, threatening to beat him to a pulp.
“Pi…you have to trust him,” Shige said, unable to say anything else.
Inside the ring of fire, Pi looked up at Yuya.
“Yuya…don’t be scared,” Pi said softly.
“I’m not.”
Pi laughed softly at the Sylph’s forced bravery. “I know.”
“Are you going to die?”
“Do you want me to?”
The Sylph shook his head in horror. He would never wish anything so horrible on someone.
“Then will you do something for me?” Pi asked, lifting his hand. Yuya gripped it tightly and nodded.
Pi whispered something in his ear, and Yuya hesitated, but he shakily agreed.
From Pi’s cloak, he withdrew a small knife. Removing its sheath, Yuya proceeded to prick the tip of Pi’s pinky. His hands shook as a drop of blood appeared, splattering to the ground. Yuya closed his eyes briefly before slowly beginning to recite the words from a Sylph saying that he had learned a long time ago.
“With blood freely given and lives at stake, I, Yuya, Summer Sylph, command and commence a Council of Sylphs.”
The ground rumbled and the flames disappeared. Yuya was flung off balance to the ground next to Pi, and he lay there before he blacked out.
------------------------------------
When Yuya finally opened his eyes, he found that he was in an altogether different place.
The large room was mostly red, with soft blood red carpet and red drapes. The walls were made of stone, and torches hung on small hooks, the only things lighting up the room. There was a large oak table in the middle, with large magnificent chairs.
Yuya stared as he recognized the four glowing figures seated at the table. Ryo, Hiroki, Kei…and Pi? The one who usually dressed in black was clothed in white like the rest, making him seem no different than the others.
Yuya turned to his side and was surprised to find Shige, Massu, and Notti beside him.
“What’s happening?” he whispered, but they seemed too entranced to answer him.
“Yuya, you’re awake,” Kei said kindly, noticing the youngest Sylph looking around in wonder. “Come and sit with us.”
Yuya shyly took his place between Hiroki and Kei. He looked up and was drawn to Pi’s dark eyes, full of mixed emotions. He tried to smile but couldn’t, intimidate by the others’ stern expressions.
“What happened?” he asked Hiroki quietly, who squeezed his hand and looked at him amusedly.
“You called this Council, didn’t you? We were waiting for you,” the older one answered. “Welcome back, Yuya.”
“Yuya.” He turned to see Ryo watching him with his usual better-than-you expression. The older one quickly nodded when Yuya bowed his head in apology. There were…other matters to discuss, now that Yuya was safe.
Yuya stared as Ryo and Pi glared at each other.
“Hello, Tomohisa,” Ryo snarled.
“Long time no see, Ryo-chan,” Pi replied simply. “Miss me?”
Yuya was startled. Wait…what?!
Chapter 12
Yuya was dazed. There was so much to take in…
After Ryo and Pi’s polite greeting, the council had started.
“You had absolutely no right to kidnap Yuya,” Ryo stated coldly.
“Are you sure about that?” Pi asked testily.
Ryo’s eyes hardened and there was an awkward silence.
“Um…” All eyes turned to Yuya. “Can someone explain what’s going on?”
Kei tread the subject as carefully as he could.
“Yuya, you know that you weren’t always the Summer Sylph. Well, Pi…he…”
“I used to be the Summer Sylph,” Pi cut in.
Yuya could hardly suppress his shock. “You? But then…how?”
“Well you see…”
“I was just trying to…”
“You completely abused your job!”
“Pi didn’t mean to, but he…”
“I was trying to protect you!”
“And you ended up failing!”
Yuya tried to make some sense out of the incomplete phrases. Ryo and Pi were trying to out shout each other while Kei was doing his best to state both sides of the argument.
“Will you all just shut up and let me explain!” Hiroki finally said, standing up and banging the table. Everyone fell silent. Hiroki rarely got angry like this.
“Look, Pi used to be the Summer Sylph. But he fell in love with a human, and he began to neglect his job to the point that people everywhere began to suffer from the irregular amounts of heat everyday. That human was you,” Hiroki said, glancing at the others to confirm his answer before looking at Yuya.
“Me?” Yuya squeaked. “How come…how come I don’t remember?”
“We made sure of that when we made you a Sylph.”
Yuya looked from Ryo to Kei to Hiroki. There was no lie in their eyes. Made him a Sylph?
“Ryo and Pi got into a huge fight one day about his lack of responsibility. During the fight, Pi lost control and took out his anger on the Earth…without realizing it, Pi started a huge fire and the city you lived in burned. He went to rescue you, but you were unconscious and badly harmed when he finally brought you out of there.”
Yuya looked up and saw the pain in Pi’s eyes. His heart felt heavy with dread.
“And then?” he whispered.
Hiroki looked away. “We made Pi leave. We took you in and helped you heal, but since you were a human that was exposed to our home, we had no choice but to turn you into one of us. We wiped your memory clean and…”
Yuya didn’t need to hear the rest. He knew. This was how he had remained oblivious for the time he had been Sylph. He had never known about his past, and now he knew why.
“We did it to protect you, Yuya,” Kei said softly. He could see how much confusion and pain plagued the younger one, and for once, he didn’t know how to fix it.
“Then…how did Tomohisa become the…the--”
“Lord of the Underworld?” Pi finished for him. “Well, that’s an interesting story. Why don’t you tell it, Shige?”
Shige, who had been sitting quietly and listening at the side with Massu and Notti, flushed when his name was suddenly called on. He wasn’t sure he could speak properly, especially in front of these people.
“I…I was chosen as the messenger of the Underworld by the former Lord. He somehow grew tired of his job and wished to pass as a regular soul instead of being bound to the task of overseeing the rest of the souls. So he gave me a pendant and told me to drop it near the entrance of the Underworld and whoever came to pick it up would be the next Lord…” Shige paused, biting his bottom lip nervously.
“And since Ryo-chan so kindly kicked me out, I found the pendant while wandering around aimlessly,” Pi said, concluding with a dark look at the Winter Sylph.
“But you didn’t give up being a Sylph,” Ryo said suddenly. “Why?”
“That’s right,” Yuya said softly to himself. “He still has wings…and he’s included in this council…”
“I could do my job better if I had both traits, wouldn’t I?” Pi answered simply. “I would rule over the Underworld and still keep track of the Sylphs…”
“You were just waiting to take Yuya back, weren’t you?” Hiroki said to him. “You wanted revenge on us for taking him away from you, so you…am I right, Pi?”
“Well, you can put it that way. But it wasn’t revenge. I only wanted what I believed to be mine.”
Ryo grunted disapprovingly. He began to understand Pi’s way of thinking a little bit, but didn’t want to admit it. After all, Ryo, in his fury, had been the one that asked Pi to leave. And no one knew, but he had regretted it later, way before any of this had happened.
“Tomohisa, do you really love me?”
Everyone seemed to freeze up at Yuya’s sudden question.
“Yuya…” Kei breathed softly. So he was correct in suspecting something between Pi and Yuya. After all, Yuya had almost bargained his life for Pi’s. If Yuya really gave up his Sylph life, he would have died and been reborn as a human again, with no memory of all that had happened.
Pi stood up and stared straight into Yuya’s eyes.
“I love you, and that will never change.”
Yuya felt a bursting satisfaction at Pi’s words. But it wouldn’t be that easy.
“But really, you shouldn’t have kidnapped me,” Yuya began, his eyes unwavering from Pi’s. “I probably have no right to say what you should have done, since I don’t remember anything, but there must have been another way in which we could have met…”
Yuya then turned to Ryo, Hiroki, and Kei. “I understand your anger at Tomohisa, but please know that the time that I was with him, he treated me well, even when I wasn’t so kind to him. Well, he could hardly blame me, but still…he saved me from all kinds of trouble and I don’t have any hard feelings against him.”
A long silence followed Yuya’s statements. Finally, Ryo cleared his throat.
“I guess what will happen next is up to Yuya, since he is the main one involved. We all agree with that, yes?” He waited until everyone had nodded. Even Massu, Notti, and Shige, who really had no say in this, nodded, and Ryo was satisfied.
“We will try to accommodate according to Yuya’s decision to the best of our abilities. But first, Yuya, you must make clear about your feelings…for him.”
“I…” Yuya tried not to squirm as all eyes fell on him. Could he really make the decision that would affect all of their lives from now on?
“I…I like him. A lot. So…I don’t want him to get hurt.”
Ryo sighed. “I see…then if Pi agrees, we will try to work out our differences.”
Pi nodded, then stuck out his hand.
“I’m sorry Ryo. We’ll probably continue to be somewhat nasty to each other but…truce?”
Ryo reluctantly shook his hand. “This doesn’t mean I forgive you,” he snapped, but there was a tone of familiarity in his voice.
“Does this mean…we’re all going to live together?” Notti asked.
Ryo glared at him. “If I can help it, no.”
“What’s going to happen to us?” Massu asked more sensibly.
“We’ll work something out,” Hiroki promised.
Yuya looked up and was met with Pi’s warm eyes.
“I think we should leave them alone now,” Kei whispered, linking his arm with Shige’s. He pushed the others out of the room.
“Yuya,” Pi said, smiling as he pulled the other close.
“I was so scared you were going to die,” Yuya said softly.
“Would take a lot to kill me,” Pi laughed, but held the Sylph a little tighter.
“So what now?” Yuya asked. “Are you a Sylph now, or a human, or a--”
“I don’t think that matters now,” Pi interrupted, leaning down to kiss him. Yuya warmly kissed him back, agreeing completely.
----------------------------------
[One Year Later]
Their new home was finally complete. A palace for eight people was constructed halfway in the Underworld and halfway out. And of course, no one could see it except its residents.
“Wah~ so big!!” Notti remarked, running around excitedly. “And my room’s next to Ryo’s!”
“I don’t see why I have to live with these idiots,” Ryo grumbled. “And half of them are gay too!”
Kei and Shige looked up from where they sat together and grinned. Ryo was so oblivious sometimes.
The four Sylphs now ruled the Earth from their half of the building, and Pi continued to rule the Underworld. Since he hadn’t selected a successor at the time he crushed the pendant, he had to remain ruler until he designated one. And he had no intentions to. However, he did create special pendants so the Sylphs would be able to survive when entering the Underworld if they wished to.
Ryo and Pi finally overcame their differences and resumed their friendship as if nothing had happened. Yuya made sure of that. Pi had also apologized to Shige and Kei for abusing their relationship, but they forgave him completely.
Massu and Hiroki became an unlikely pair of friends, and they often hung out together, creating secrets that the others didn’t even bother to try to butt into.
As for Yuya and Pi, there were no more hindrances to their relationship, and they often embarrassed the others by being so close all the time.
“Get a room!” Ryo shouted at them. “And preferably not this one! At least Kei and Shige keep it discreet!”
“Ryo’s just jealous,” Pi mumbled as he continued to kiss Yuya’s neck.
“I mean it!” Ryo growled, throwing a pillow across the room.
Yuya laughed and pulled Pi to his feet. “Come on, before Ryo-chan blows up!”
They found an empty room soon enough.
“I want you, Princess,” Pi growled as he pinned Yuya to the bed.
“Princess? You haven’t called me that in a while,” Yuya said. “I’m not that girly looking, am I?”
“Hmmm,” Pi said teasingly, before kissing him softly on the forehead. “You’re my princess and I’m your prince, who’s come to sweep you off your feet.”
“Is that what the nickname was about?” Yuya asked. “Then you’ll be happy to know that you’ve accomplished your task.” He paused, and then added, “Even though it took a while.”
“It was a worthwhile wait then,” Pi whispered and proceeded to claim his prize princess.
