A bunch of rants I cooked up (one with the help of a friend) and am posting out of impulse and anger.

Warning, spoilers for the manga chapters abound, upto the latest.

Defense for everyone's favourite Automail mechanic, Winry Rockbell. Also reasons why she rocks )

I honestly can't see why anyone can fault Winry for something biological. I have large breasts, and I'm not a slut, so why does everyone think that BIG BOOBIES=WHORE? Using someone's body against them is no way to bash a character or a person, whether the person be attractive or not. It's the substance of character that people need to base their oppinions on. Obviously Winry AND Mei have proved themselves realistic and independent characters that help rather then creating unnessesary drama. However, showing weakness doesn't mean Tsundere or that they are whimps. Think back to when you were twelve, and any girl can tell you they had some passionate crush for SOMEONE. Me, it shifted from Backstreet Boys to Matt from Digimon, but it's different for every person. I had an obsessive adoration for both, I would constantly daydream about them sweeping me off my feet and taking me away. This is the phase Mei is in, and no one can fault her for being NATURAL. Also, crying does not mean the person is dependent/whimpy. If I was in Winry's situation, I know I would cry. Think about it, the first time we see her cry it's when things are falling apart between two of the people she loves most. (note: She doesn't go cry in a corner about it, she takes action) The second time is when she is reminded of an extremely painful event for both her AND Ed, and it is also regret for breaching his trust. (think: You just went behind your best friends back and found out something horrible, at least she's strong enough to fess up to what she did. I know some people who would never tell and just pretend it never happened.) The third time is after a dear friend DIES. Who with a heart WOULDN'T cry? The fourth and final time we have seen Winry cry (so far) is when she is facing the man that she just found out brutally murdered her parents. If anyone can fault her for that, I think I would shoot them. She also isn't the only one to ever cry in the series. Both Izumi and Riza cry at points in the story, and these women are respected for their general badassery. Sure, they only cry once or twice, but a big role in that is that they are older and have had more experience. Winry is perfectly justified whenever she cries in the manga, so the haters can get over themselves. As for pairings hindering the plot, that's a bunch of bullshit. The pairings in FMA help the characters to grow and advance the plot through their new experience. It's a huge plot point that Ed promises that he'll never make Winry cry again except for tears of joy, it's what keeps him alive when he gets impaled(as well as the drive to find his brother). There are many points in the manga where Ed references this promise, it is a crucial part of his decision making. Is that not plot? Or when Bradley takes Riza hostage, does this not profoundly affect Roy's future decisions? What about when Ed punches Greed!Ling shouting "WHAT ABOUT RAN FAN?" and is actually able to reach the real Ling who is trapped inside? The pairings in FMA aren't accessories, they play their parts to make FMA the great series that it is. If you want "gay love", go pair Garfield with someone. Don't discredit the strong women in the series to comfort your inability to canonically pair the male main characters with eachother, or your OC's for that matter.

Best statement ever.

And kudos for the whole Winry-isn't-a-crybaby thing. Hell, she cries less than I do, and my life is peachy keen. (I just have some kind of mental disorder >.>)
