I have been remiss on my comments on episode five of Venice. I had all the best intentions of doing it last weekend and didn’t get to it. Then this week work has been crazy with both staff and residents sick. So, before tonight’s episode (#6) of Venice airs, here are my thoughts on episode #5.
Technical - Not quite sure what I think yet on the sound balancing for the first scene. Seems a little off, but it could be more related to acoustics of the room in which they were filming. Interesting perspective on filming mirror shots versus non in the first scene. In the beach scene, the hand-camera filming was a bit shaky (jerky movements) for close-ups. The lighting, however, was gorgeous (see below).
Development & Personal Interaction:
Gina/Owen: I’m really enjoying the sibling relationship between Gina and Owen. They have each other’s support, both in dealing with other relationships (blind date/romance date) as well as with their father. There’s the good-natured ribbing that comes with brother-sister relationships. There’s the continuity from the previous episode, wherein Gina’s asking for Owen’s help on romancing Tracy (which Tracy had said in ep4 that she wanted from Gina). There’s also the continuity of the brunch with The Colonel’s call to Gina (from which was mentioned in ep4 when Guya told the Colonel to invite them for brunch or she would). I’m thinking ep 6, which we’ll be seeing tonight (22nd January), we will get to see that brunch. Leading to seeing continued family dynamics.
Gina/Tracy - the romance of the date on a beach. Some interesting reveals going on in this scene. 1) Gina`s not comfortable with romancing another woman. As Tracy put it, Gina`s pretty confident about her abilities to be with a woman in a one-night stand kind of way, but not in an actual relationship. 2) Gina`s quite likely a workaholic, putting most of her energy into her work in order to avoid personal commitment. 3) More on this below, but the discussion about introspection, being alone with oneself to find out who we are and what we want with our lives, can be very hard. 4) Gina recognises in herself patterns of behaviour that Tracy mentions she had gone through before realising it was because she was unhappy with her life. A personal awakening. I really want to see how this bit of information affects Gina`s actions/reactions in the future. How it makes her think about where her life is presently and where she wants it to go in the future.
The romance: Seriously, if Gina were to offer me grapes, wine & sour gummies...I’d be in hook, line & sinker. But I do love Gina’s attention to detail, remembering the little things about another person, and reflecting that back into this date, was romantic. The slow kiss was sweet and beautiful.
Scenic - Okay, I’m a HUGE sucker for beach scenes like this. Sunsets/sunrises over the ocean are absolutely gorgeous. And Gina`s concept of sitting and staring at the water, and introspection being sometimes quite difficult is something I`ve done on occasion. Something about the vastness of looking out over the water and realising that sometimes our internal struggles may seem huge to us, but there`s so much out there, so much beauty (even in rough seas), that perspective can help settle our thoughts, and find peace. Recognising patterns in our behaviours and learning from them is often a difficult process.
On a personal thank you note: Thank you God for natural sunlight on Crystal Chappell. Seriously.
Music - The production team has been really good at showcasing new/newish artists. This time (ep 5), we were introduced to the music
Jessi Lynn with “A Little Bit of You”, during the second scene/closing credits. As usual, you can find the artist’s website link above, and below are the twitter links for the Venice musicians:
