Silly Confessions

(Icon chosen because of the name of the character.)

There was a meme that used to pop up every so often called the Unpopular Opinion Meme, where people posted, well, opinions that (they thought) were unpopular. (I say "they thought," because usually the result was a bunch of people going, "Me, too!", thus proving that the opinions were not that unpopular.) My unpopular opinion was that I never really liked the meme, because I thought it was a way to say something provocative and sometimes even hurtful without dealing with the response, as it felt like the "well I said it was unpopular" was implied.

That said, I do have unpopular opinions, although how popular or unpopular they are depends largely on my audience (yeah, yeah, rhetorician until I die). However...

...okay, wait a minute. This is becoming an incredibly serious introduction to something that's meant to be very silly. (Picture a member of Monty Python coming in and saying, "No, no, this is not silly enough. Must stop." Let's start over.

Hi! My name is Lucy, and I often have strong feelings on very silly things. I would like to share some with you, and in turn, hear some of yours. A nice, lighthearted meme for the end of the year. And so I present:

The Silly Confessions Meme

1. I love unusual names. Not just names that are usual in cultures other than mine (slighty-German-by-way-of-English-middle-class-Midwest-American), although I love learning those, too, but names that aren't particularly usual anywhere. I actually really like names that take a typical name and change the first letter; I think "Miley" is an awesome name, and it kills me that it's so associated with one person (not because of who she is; just because it's a "celebrity" name). I think "Apple" is kind of cute, and that people who worry about her being teased have forgotten what playgrounds are like - I have one of the most mainstream first names you can imagine, and I was still teased about it. I love "made up" names, which I think is a silly thing itself, because all names were made up at some point, or we'd all be named, "{guttural grunt}." I think one of the best things about my job is that I get to see lists of names every few months, and there's always a gem somewhere.

2. I like Skipper a lot better now that she's dyeing her hair black with a pink/purple/blue streak. And I still think "Skipper" is an awesome name. I remain confused as to why "Kelly" became "Chelsea," though (or maybe was split into Stacie? I'm telling you, they're from Gallifrey. It's the ONLY EXPLANATION. Who else could expand a camper to reveal a jacuzzi?).

3. I have now seen Equestria Girls so many times that the My Little Pony ponies look weird to me as ponies. If you're sitting there going, "Huh?", just walk away. Trust me. It's better that you don't know.

Okay, your turn! Post here or in your journal, whichever!

(Note: Please note the "lighthearted fun" part. If you want to argue with me about the introduction, fair enough, but if you want to start a serious argument about names or Skipper or Twilight Sparkle's bizarre legwarmers, I'm just gonna look at you with a very silly expression.)
