Day 9. Saddest Scene in a Game

I've got three.

3. Parts of Metal Gear Solid 4 were so bizarre and intense sometimes I feel like I hallucinated them.

Fucking.

Microwave

Hallway

Why would Kojima do this to us? T-the music. O-Otacon's pleading. Everyone fighting to survive. A-and then Sunny. Sunny cooks the eggs right for the first time ever.

2. So in Xenogears remember when Hammer is an affably amoral and very lovable side character? And how he helps you out a lot and hangs out on your ship and had that one famous line that cracks everyone up?

AND THEN REMEMBER WHEN HE BETRAYS YOUR PARTY AND YOU HAVE TO FIGHT HIM AND IT'S THE WORST THING EVER.

I don't even know if this counts as 'sad'. Honestly, the face-heel turn of Hammer and the subsequent nightmare scenario of his boss battle (merged with his gear, half crazy, self-destructs in the regular scenario) has gotta be one of the most traumatic plot twists I have ever experienced in a video game. Hammer is so innocent. And the players love for him... i-is so... s-so innocent...

1. My first time through Final Fantasy VI, I tried really hard to save Cid. I really did.

The worst thing about his death is that even if you know it's a possibility, there's a random factor to exactly when he finally kicks the bucket, so even if you've played the game before, his death still feels like a kick in the gut.

And then Celes jumps off the goddamn cliff.

Like most fans, I by far prefer the scenario in which Cid dies just because it's so beautiful in context of the game.

This sad moment of course, is swiftly followed by one of the most uplifting moments in game history where you meet Sabin again and he is single-handedly keeping a burning house from collapsing.

"WHAT. DID YOU THINK A LITTLE THING LIKE THE END OF THE WORLD WOULD KEEP ME DOWN?"

Also, I'll give you a bonus moment here.

Silent Hill 2 is probably the overall saddest game I've ever played. And this ending has always struck me as the saddest of them.

Day 9. The Most Believiable Relationship

Yeah, yeah, the marriage issues were terrible and I hate they way they've been written lately, but seriously. These two. When you talk about the "big" DC romances, most people point to Superman/Lois Lane or Batman/Catwoman, but really, Green Arrow and Black Canary are the real flagship pairing of the company. These two have been on and off together since 1969 (when you count how both of them have been de-aged through various means on top of it, they've been together in comic time nearly that long as well) and no romantic relationship evokes such twin devotion and consternation as these two. Think how Marvel fans feel about Gambit and Rogue.

I think part of the reason so many people have a problem with this relationship (aside from the occasional bad writing of course) is because it's so realistic. Real romantic relationships bring out both the best and the worst in people, but when we see the worst of Ollie and Dinah, fandom takes it as an example of how they're horrible for each other instead of an example of how their relationship has many facets. We've seen them bicker and snicker. We've seen them go about the daily minutiae of their life and save the universe. We've seen them struggle with Dinah's infertility and Ollie's... failure... at pretty much everything. They've created a family for themselves that is probably the most tight-knit and warmly woven of all superhero families (with probable competition from the original Teen Titans) and have never lost that spark of honest entertainment and attraction that brought them together in the first place.

Also, you totally know that they've convinced Hal to have a threesome at least twice. C'mon- it was the 70's.

psst, the speech bubble is over the wrong character.
