After two days of ceremonies, my clone-sibling is officially Graduated from Carnegie Mellon and has her BFA degree. There was much more Formal Academic Ritual than I recall experiencing at the Pomona graduation; when I got to meet Anthea's advisor, who is a University of Washington alum, I was able to see firsthand the awesome voluminous purple velvet-trimmed robes that I will be eligible to wear when I complete my doctorate. Do want. Anthea got to carry the banner for the College of Fine Arts, because she is the awesomest (and among the most decorated of the students in the school.) I am awfully pleased to be associated with such an accomplished individual. Soon we will use our combined powers to take over the world.
Many of the speeches and whatnot were actually quite inspiring. The commencement speaker was Aron Ralston, the fellow who had to cut off his right hand to get free of a boulder that had trapped him in a Colorado canyon (turns out he's a CMU alum.) It was actually quite an interesting speech, and he discussed how his CMU engineering degree had inspired some of the problem-solving methods he attempted during his ordeal. In some ways he made the whole thing sound like just another interesting challenge.
Headed home tomorrow; I've got a lot of serious catching up to do on research and my Inverse Methods class, which is breaking my brain in all kinds of ways. But it's still probably easier than being trapped in a canyon for most of a week and having to drink your own urine.
