Double Standards

What exactly is a double standard? A double standard is a set of principles establishing different provisions for one group or individual than another. That said, is a double standard inherently wrong or bad? NO.

Think about your day and how many double standards you accept and propagate, many without even realizing it.

How many times do you drive through a wealthy neighborhood with no concern and then through a poor one and immediately lock the doors? With the correlation of crime and income, it is a reasonable precaution.

As a manager, should a new hire be immediately held the same standard of performance as someone who has been there 20 years? Absolutely not. It would be unreasonable to assume that a new hire has the knowledge base of an experienced individual and thus unacceptable to hold him/her to the same standard.

Are men and women held to different standards in competitive sports? They certainly are. It is expected that men will be faster and stronger in terms of physical performance in many sports. This is why many sports are segregated by sex and those that aren't, many times, will award a first place medal to the highest performing male and one to the highest performing female.

Is any of this wrong? I guess the answer to that question lies with whom you ask. However, before judging someone else because of their obvious double standard, be sure to understand that you live by some double standards as well.
