The scientist

Having actually stayed the entire previous evening at the lab, Clarke was able to get of there at a reasonable time today. He still hadn't touched his personal projects but the evidence backlog was now at a reasonable level and the breakthrough he made at 1 am this morning was very important for one the cases. He felt like a success for all the ( Read more... )

She had a choice leaving the hospital. She could walk home, shower, change and drive her own car to Clarke's. She could hail a cab to her place, shower, change, then drive over to Clarke's. Or she could just take the cab to Clarke's and wash up at his place. He wouldn't mind would he? It had been a long time since they'd seen each other. Of course, he'd probably already ordered the food. It would be cold if she took too long.

Ultimately, she said fuck it and just head over to his place. If he was weirded out by the idea of her showering at his place, she could just wash up a little bit at the sink and wait to shower when she got home at the end of the night.

Traffic was a nightmare. She knew it would be but the driver insisted on talking on his phone the whole time in whatever middle eastern language he spoke. It definitely effected his tip. As she walked up the stairs she called Clarke.

"What are the chances you'd come down and carry me up so I don't have to do all these steps?"

DC traffic was always a nightmare, not to mention parking was never terribly plentiful so Clarke was expecting Sam to take a while to get to his building. She arrived before the food did which didn't bother him since they could just hang out until it arrived.

"Aren't doctors supposed to advocate exercise?" He teased.

With a whiny pouty, she took the first step, then the next. She'd be okay. She just had a penchant for the dramatic. "You suck." She grumbled when she was about halfway up.

"Is the food here yet?" She asked as she tried to just walk into his place without knocking.

"Not yet. I ordered from Mr. Chow's so it should be here soon. You want something to drink? I have milk and beer and stuff."

He was amused by that she just walked right in. He held his arm out as if to say some on in. He had to laugh. "So this is how it feels to have made it in the world. You get to be exhausted all the time."

"Mmm I love Mr. Chow's. Uh... Sure. Juice if you have any. Water if you don't." She replied as she set her stuff down so she could hug him. It was more fatigue than anything that made her linger.

"Hey, do you think I could use your shower?"

He lingered too due to fatigue, but a different kind of exhaustion than she was likely experiencing. A show of how human they both were on display in the moment.

"Have you skipped out on your water bill again?" He smiled, suddenly happy he had cleaned up the place earlier. He nodded and moved toward the bedroom. "Sure. Let me get you a clean towel." He grabbed a white towel from the folded clothes basket and handed it to her. "You're going to smell like me. That's okay, I smell pretty good."

"Ha ha." She replied rolling her eyes but she was smiling. "I just couldn't resist your irresistible appeal any longer. I hotwired the first car I found, ran every red light, all the while wiggling out of my panties under my pants and coming up with this dastardly plot to find a way to get completely naked. Ooh a clean towel. That's practically an admission of your undying love. Now if you don't mind, I'd like to not smell like hospital funk and feet."

Snatching the towel from him, she gave him and grin then all but skipped to his bathroom.

"You'll have to get in line. Women just won't stop saying to me. You must be the 8th or 9th today."

He had to smile when she skipped to the bathroom. She could exhausted and smell like funk but she'd still be kind of adorable. Walking back to the living room/kitchen area, he feels some of the stress he had been carrying around melting off his shoulders. There was no guess work tonight, not with Sam. They would just hang out and have a good time catching up.

He poured Sam some orange juice and grabbed a water bottle for himself. Mr. Chow's came before Sam got out of the shower so he was able to set it all out on the coffee table. He felt truly relaxed for the first time in a long time.

"Must be why you look so tired."

The hot water felt incredible. She was tempted to just let it beat on her a while but she knew he was still damp from his own shower and she didn't know how much hot water was left. She was hoping that he had just regular soap but it seemed like every guy had guy specific soap now so he wasn't kidding when he said she would smell like him. Though he really meant she would smell like a guy. She almost went ahead and used it until she saw his fairly generic shampoo. It wasn't Herbal Essence but at least she would just smell like Head and Shoulders and not like Axe.

If her stomach hadn't been growling she would have stayed until the hot water ran out. Then when she opened that door and the smell of Chinese hit her. "Mmm! Okay, you're going to have to deal with me in a towel 'cause I'm not getting dressed wet."

"Yep. It's all sex and nothing to do with overtime at work."

The thing about living in an apartment building like this is that you don't really run out of how water. And, Clarke is a guy so his showers are quick. He's also a simple (read: fairly poor) guy so Speed Stick and Lever 2000 are his go to toiletries.

His eyes wander a little more than he means for them to (especially while he's looking dignified with an egg roll in his hand) when she steps out. "If it's about your clothes, you can borrow some of my sweats. Or you're fine how you are."

He hands her a fork. "I didn't bother with plates."

"So you're telling me that you didn't volunteer for all that extra work? That doesn't sound like you at all."

She smiled and head over to the couch. "My clothes are fine I just don't want to put them off and then spend the whole time being uncomfortable and damp. I just want to air dry a bit first if that's okay."

And if the way he was sneaking looks when he thought she wasn't looking was anything to go by, it was more than okay. Sam took the offered fork then glanced at what he got before digging into what looked like Beijing chicken. The second it touched her lips, she was in heaven. She didn't even know there was a Mr. Chow's in DC but now that she did she was going to abuse the fuck out of it. "Oh my god. Did you try the chicken. Try it. It's like a fucking orgasm in my mouth."

"You mean it's unbelievable that I was actually having all that sex?" He snickered. "Yes, yes it is."

"It's okay, yeah. Just giving you some options." It's not like it's anything he hasn't seen before. Moreover, it's not like he's not getting a thrill out a beautiful naked girl in his living room.

"I know, it's my favorite," he takes a bite and makes a happy noise. "This dish right here is responsible for me not keeping a New Year's resolution to cook more."

Alright, so they were essentially doused in small talk but Clarke was okay with that. And the chicken was damn good.

Sam thought about it a second and shrugged. "You know, I honestly don't know. I mean you weren't like that back in the day but then again neither was I. For all I know you're a giant man-slut now ( ... )

"I've submitted my resume everywhere but they just aren't hiring as many giant man sluts as they used to." He smiled. He knew she was mostly joking but she sort of had a point. She didn't know him all that well anymore and he didn't like that. "I'm not all different than I was back in the day. You'll see because I'm determined that we're going to hang out more ( ... )

"Well, times they are a-changin'." She chuckled. "Really? I find that a little hard to believe. Not because I think you're worse or anything. I just know how different I am. I mean I'm still bossy and loud but..." She stops, shrugs, and sighs. "...eventually I had to grow up. I had to learn how to sacrifice and accept no as an answer, which I still hate but now I don't rage against it. You can't always get what you want but sometimes that's really the best thing for you. You just can't see it in the moment. In the moment, it just feels like loss. Of course, the big one I'm learning now is how to balance. How to be a good doctor without losing what it is that makes me a good person. It's hard ( ... )

He listens to her words carefully. That's part of what he's doing now, listening carefully and thinking before he responds. It occurs to him that Sam is so different than Jen. Jen operates on a system of all-or-nothing, now-or-never, me-or-the-road ultimatums. Clarke is aware Jen doesn't feel she has the time to compromise and to an extent he forgives her for it. What Sam is saying makes so much sense to him. It feels natural and it feels good to hear it said aloud without anyone being accused of being puppy like. He immediately feels guilty for thinking of Jen so much but pushes it away.

"I agree with all of that. I have grown a lot too, I'm more assertive, more open to new things, more patient. I'm learning that 'no' is something that has to be accepted and that I always have to say no sometimes also or I'll burn out or go insane. Essentially who I am is the same though. Still not much of a man whore."

He chuckles a little and puts down the cardboard carton he was holding. "You can still borrow some clothes if you want fresh
