He is Autistic and has certain "quirks". Like he stems and when he stems he tenses up his body and grinds his hands together. He can't help it. It's the way he rids himself of his anxiety. If I stop his from grinding his hands next to his face, he will only find another way to do it. It's changed as the years have gone by. But still, if people don't know him or what he has, they automatically think "retard". And I hate that. He asked me yesterday if Autism made him retarded. It totally broke my heart...
i learned about that in grade school . Sam was on my soccer team and he would suddenly stop everything and dig in the grass, we knew he wasnt DS but he was different . he could speak coherently but his quirks made him a target. Sam re-appeared after grade school and had lost a few toes from a lawn mower??? But he was now a fellow new waver in high school, he was there very shortly. I found out his Dad was a Nuclear Physicist at Lawrence Livermore Lab and that Sam too was a freakin Genious. havent seen Sam since but wonder what happened to him. I imagine in a Lab somewhere saving the lives of those who teased him.
Dood, Calvin was diagnosed an Autistic Savant at an early age. In 3rd grade, he was sent off to a sixth grade room for math class. I keep telling Calvin that if he applies himself since he is so smart, he can do whatever he wants. He is aiming towards science. :) What poetic justice though. I hope he is working in a lab making the cure for Cancer or something. Poor baby losing his toes though..:/
You know last week I saw 20/20 they had a teacher that had Tourettes Syndrome. No one wanted to hire him and he went on 20 interviews. Finally this school hired him and he and another kid who has tourettes stood up and informed everyone about what they had. I think education from the school itself is the easiest. People make fun of shit they don't understand. That really sucks kids can be so mean. I know dillon get's called shit all the time. That fucking sucks:(
Well, this was one of the things I have always worried about. Granted, the first four grades of school, kids are more tolerant to such things. It's a fight I am going to have to fight for a long, long time. I just want Calvin to know how kickass he is and that is not "retarded" cause of his Autism. He asked me if he was "retarded" this morning cause of his Autism. I told him NO! It's nothing he can help. But what he does need to focus on is that he is smarter than the rest of the kids in 5th grade and that in itself is great! :)
Hopefully things get better. My brother and sister are both dyslexic and were in special education from the time they were in 1st grade, until they graduated from high school. elementary school and jr high were rough for them (my brother actually punched a classmate in the face for calling him retarded and said 'YOU'RE IN HERE TOO!), but when they got to high school the teasing pretty much stopped. I guess most kids are too worried about themselves or just become more mature. There will always be douchebags, but as long as you can recognize this, you'll be alright. You're doing the right thing by being involved. :)
As shitty as the situation is, it's good that he feels comfortable talking about it with you, and even better that you are taking action. This is the kind of thing you definitely want to nip in the bud. The kids at my gradeschool said & did terrible things to me for years, and I thought I was being strong by not telling my parents...looking back, I could have saved myself a lot of therapy if I had just opened up. He trusts you, and you're doing everything you can to take care of the situation before it gets any worse -- which is the best way to deal with it.
Kids that age can be really hurtful, but that doesn't mean it's okay, or that teachers should allow it to continue. I hope everything turns out for the best :)
calvin is one of the most awesomest kids in the world (aside from my own, obviously). he's going to go through these kinds of things from time to time, which is going to suck. maybe he can learn that people who say things like 'retard' just don't understand about special needs like the kind that calvin has. maybe they're jealous that calvin gets special attention and they don't.

I can't have him growing up thinking he is the "r" word. He's a frigging genius! He needs to see that and not the fact he has Autism. :)
I dedicate Tenacious D's Dio to you... :p
