Estate Sale

Spooky got some visitors today. Kids next door stopped by with some toys and overloaded his senses. He played for a while and then crashed. They all got to pet him a little. I did find that he has fleas, he left some little spots on the couch where he had been sleeping that were the dried blood 'poo' of fleas. So I put a drop of the Frontline on him, and did Smudge so that she doesn't become a host. I also vacuumed which freaked him out, but what can you do. He sleeps a huge amount. I always figure kittens are just playing machines, but I guess like babies they need to sleep a lot too.

My cold is going.... but I still feel blech. I got to skip the papers this morning and sleep a bit extra. I still got up by nine thought because there were two yard sales I wanted to hit. The first was an 'estate sale' and they mentioned tools. I've learned that estate sales are really great for getting tools, because no one wants them, they are all looking for the antiques, and if they are old people, they were probably frugal and cared for them pretty well. Well, bingo for me, I found the rock rake I needed for the cemetery ( no, I'm not going to buy one of the new crappy ones if I can help it) and I found a bunch of wood chisels and carving tools, and a short pry bar all for $10.00. The rake alone was worth that. The only problem I have with estate sales is that the person has usually died, and you think about how some day, this same thing will be happening to all your stuff. All your treasured things being picked over and pawed at, and then most of it eventually just chucked in the trash. It's sad. But for me, today I rescued and will put to good use some well used tools.

The second yard sale was on the street I grew up on. Its such a weird trip to go down there. I rounded a corner and was delighted to see the red wooden fence that I would see every day going to and coming home from school was STILL THERE! I can't imagine the wood it's made out of, but it has to be more than 25 years old. My old house looks so different. First off, it looks like someone moved it 20 feet closer to the road. The maple trees that were just saplings when I was a kid are now huge towering trees, really too much for the house. And they of course added on to the little ranch. I still think it's amazing to see houses in the neighborhood that haven't been radically added on to. Actually some of them are down right wrecks. It's good to keep the property values down a bit. lol

The home with the yard sale was someone who had been there for a long time, but I didn't know them. The son who was selling everything must have been in his 50s at least. And wow! what a mess! His mother died a year ago apparently (yes, I eaves drop) and he was selling the house I guess. It was mostly crap, and if it wasn't, you couldn't tell because he had just throw boxes and boxes of stuff in to the yard. The house was open to go in and poke around, I guess everything was basically for sale (except the microwave which looked new that I did ask about). Downstairs was the 'computer room' and beside the computer was an ashtray piled with butts, and on the floor beside that was a food tin filled with ashes and butts. It was disgusting. Like the guy was saving them for some project or something. That's when I decided there was nothing I was going to find here. Too freaky. I imagine the guy in his skivvies chain smoking and watching porn. Yeah, I'm outa here.

So that was my yard sailing day. Good score early on. And a reminder that you can't go home again. lol
