If you would be so kind as to listen; maybe it would be possible to ask a question.
What do you want to do in life?
what do you want to do? where do you want to go? what do you want out of life?
This is a question that I was thinking about as BT07 pulled me out of my routine life and opened up the visible horizon just a little bit - but eneough. What do I want out of life? What do I want to do?
I want to help people; Even if helping people is only one person a day, or a year (hopefully its more like 1 person an hour at least). But the main deal is I want to help others.
With that being said, what am I expecting to get out of life?
Well, obviously I'm not helping people for selfish gain (i.e. getting into heaven because to strive to get into heaven is a selfish gain and if we are made in the image of God (*see almost all religious teachings) when did God want us to be selfish?) (btw, i'm trying not to bring God into this one so please pardon that). I want to help people because its the right thing to do. Why should the corrupt corporate chairman make all the money and do the most wrong when there are plenty of pure souls out there with nothing? Which reminds me! Some see money as a blessing and will strive to make money their whole life, which is silly becuase then the point of life is missed! This lifes goal is not to make money! Money is such a petty object compared to everything else in the universe. And money doesn't buy happiness (a poll was done across the U.S. that shows with the rise of economic growth and more available money happiness has actually decreased). Sometimes money can be a curse, not a blessing. But of course, still, sometimes its a blessing. Therefore in some cases being poor can be a blessing that allows you to more easily strive for the gain of virtues.
Anyway, back to main topic - I want to help people in order to serve humanity, God, and my soul.
Simple as that.
This means late night talks, global travel trips to teach poor children, intense studying and forceful memorization of Scripture, it means providing an example of how to live a peaceful life.
The purpose of life is to acquire virtues. This was stated by 'Abdu'l-Baha but it is not religion based. These virtues you then carry on with you to the next life.
Its harder than you may think.
For those of you that believe in God/His religions, you will notice that as I stated earlier mankind is made in the image of God, and the acquiring of these virtues is man manifesting these attributes of God, for all virtues are of God.
(One might say, "is not the purpose of life to serve God?" To this I would reply that service is a virtue and you have therefore acquired a virtue in serving God. This is to say that serving God is a goal, yes, but the ultimate purpose of our lives is to acquire virtues.)
