I've just had my hopes raised and my dreams crushed in the span of one hour.

Last night Martino opened a letter from the Canadian Institute of Planners (of which he is a member). It was an offer to travel to South Africa as part of CIP's delegation for an international planners' conference or some such thing. The cost is 6000$US per person for 10 days, all inclusive. As in, all the tours and special events are covered too.

That's 12,550$CAD, plus we still have to get to Toronto to catch the flight. So add another 1600$ (flight within Canada is ridiculous). That makes it a 14,000$ trip without spending anything (and money WOULD be spent on knicknacks, eating out and other things!).

I searched online, and to fly from Regina to Cape Town and back for two people is 6000$. Add another 1000$ for hotel (looks like the average cost for a hotel is about 50$US a night, so that accounts for much more), and we're at half the cost. Essentially, we could go and plan to spend an extra 3000$ on trips, food, etc and still be 4000$ less than this trip. So sadly, it just doesn't make sense to go.

Then, this morning when I tell him this, Martino emails me back and says that I misread - it's 6000$ for BOTH of us to go. That, my friends, is a horse of a different colour! I ask him if he's sure, because I thought it said "per person." In fact, I read it three times to be sure that it said "per person." He assured me that no, no, it was per delegate and guest.

So now I'm excited. We'd have to cancel the other two trips (Vegas and Mexico) that we had planned for this year, but we could definitely swing that. DEFINITELY. YES. We are doing this.

Less than an hour later Martino emails me back. The subject reads "okay, I guess I suck." Yep, who was right? 6000$ per person. He messaged CIP for more information, and they clarified it for him. My reply? I HATE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW.

So no, we are not going to Africa this year. Instead, I'm sending Martino back to school to learn how to read, and hitting myself upside the head with a 2x4 for believing him and assuming that I misread it.
