I finished Dead Souls last night, well, the first book of Dead Souls. I'll work on reading the second, unfinished part of Dead Souls after this.
I enjoyed it. It was hard to get into at first, but by the last 3rd of the book it was pretty funny. I wasn't too fond of the narrative style which frequently stopped, went off on a 2 page expository about why the author wasn't allowed to use dirty language, then said "now let's get back to our hero" and resumed action. It felt like an episode of Batman.
