Alone at work

I've been reading some of my friends' blogs today and I've realized not only how smart they are, but how observant and insightful they are. It makes me feel incredibly ungrateful and unobservant. I've been so wrapped up in what's going on in my life that I've neglected to look at the lives of those around me. I don't really appreciate the beauty ( Read more... )

I feel that way when I read Ellen's blog all the time :) But I think it's probably because I am self-centered ;)

Dude, it was Ellen's blog I was reading! (Ellen, I'm sure you're reading this.) She has such a way with words and I feel like, in comparison, my life is full of nothing important. Then I thought, perhaps it's because she's living in a foreign country. But my life wasn't like that when I was in Germany!

And I like to think I'm not self-centered. But perhaps I am and should just accept it. ;)

Oh, I know - that's why I said that ;)

I don't think you're self-centered. I was just commenting that I am :)

haha. And I don't think you're self-centered. Well, at least not all the time. ;)

Just kidding!

By the way, blogs are almost by their nature self-centered, so don't feel bad if yours seems to be the same. I mean, really, they're just diaries that others can read, and what's a diary but "today this happened to me..."

You're not unobservant or ungrateful.

I agree with agentelrond. Blogs are self-centered by nature, but I don't think that's a bad thing. They're interesting records of contemporary life that could make for a great sociological study. Think about it--history students in the future won't be reading journals of the early 21st Century. They'll be reading blogs! (If the information survives, that is. A good reason to make back-ups and hard copies.)

I started my blog when I moved to Korea because I wanted to keep a journal of my life here, but I knew I didn't have the discipline to do it on my own. However, knowing that people read it, I'm more apt to write, and then I have that record for myself.

I would NEVER characterize you as unobservant or ungrateful. In fact, one of the things I've always appreciated about you is that you have an interesting way of seeing the world, and your thoughts and insights help inspire mine.

Wow, Ellen. Thank you so much.

And your blog is terribly interesting, especially to one who's never been to Asia. As I go through all the journals I miss, I enjoy reading about the quirks and nuances of life over there. Especially as seen by someone who never will fit in, visually, since I'm sure that changes how people treat you. Keep it coming!
