Hey people.

Guess what?

Just because something isn't shoved in the audience's face doesn't mean it's not there. There's this thing, see, it's called subtlety. Now, I don't have much of it myself, but I can recognize it. And it's actually a good thing when telling a story ( Read more... )

I KNOW, RIGHT??

It's something I didn't really see as I sat in the theatre. I picked up pieces of it ("What's up with this vow, anyway?"), but it didn't come together for me until the drive home when I had a chance to think about it.

The Red Queen/White Queen issue is far more complicated than the surface story would have you believe. If the White Queen manipulated her way into the crown (which is probable, otherwise how did the youngest become Queen anyway?), then hells yeah, the Red Queen totally has a point.

On the other hand, the Red Queen didn't do such a good job of things when she did get power, did she? And at least the White Queen seems capable of controlling her darker impulses, right? I think barely. I think they're closer to the surface than she likes to admit.

But then, who knows how the Red Queen might have been if her sister hadn't manipulated their parents? Or had treated her kindly? Or if their parents had treated her kindly? It's strongly implied that she was always made fun of for her big head by the people who ( ... )

Yeah, from the little flashback, looked like the White Queen's reign was much like her castle: LET'S ALL PLAY NICE OR ELSE. Which doesn't seem very fun.

Not that I'm advocating not playing well with others. XD

I just think having a ruler who is sticky sweet but could snap at any moment would make me incredibly nervous.

Dude, the White Queen was practically GIDDY when she meted out punishments worse than death, wasn't she??? And her punishment? Hit right at the heart of the Red Queen's needs and fears. You want to be loved? Desperately need t be loved? Okay. From now on no one can talk to you. EVER. Your only company is the guy who tried to kill you.

Indeed! The Red Queen was childish cruelty. Even the whiplash way she screams "Off with [so-and-so's] head!" She doesn't understand death. She doesn't really understand the permanentness of what she's doing to others, and she doesn't care. For her, they're toys, dolls, that can be broken and replaced.

The White Queen very much understands. She knows what death and violence do to people, and if she let herself she would revel in it. Her cruelty is--despite her being the younger sister--more sophisticated.

I dunno. I didn't think this one was bad, but I didn't think it was particularly good for the most part, either. Like you've said, the Queens were the best part. I enjoyed the movie better in the later contemplation.

GUUUUUH.

Someone in the original debate left a comment to me that was all "writers shouldn't assume the casual movie-goer is perceptive enough to see [how fucking psycho the White Queen is]."

So... writers should assume the "casual movie-goer" is too fucking lazy to think five seconds on what they've seen? That's insulting to the very "casual movie-goer" this person is trying to defend!

OH HAI GOOD MORNING.

And you're fast, too.

Absolutely ridiculous. And I was sooo tempted to go off on a ranty tangent about how that's what's fucking WRONG with education and the work force and everything is that we don't EXPECT any thought from anyone anymore. Kids are having trouble in English class? Oh, well, we'll just relax the rules of spelling and grammar. And let's not teach cursive so stringently anymore. Not like anyone ever actually USES it, right?

And now our MOVIES are supposed to be unintelligent drivel all the time??

What next? Books without symbolism or foreshadowing are ambiguity?

KILL ME NOW.

Awwww. D: I sowies.

I have to go to work. =.= At 9:30. And stay until 6pm. Grrr.

(But you can write in cursive! That's a big improvement over most of the people I see in my job! People in their 20s or even 30s who claim to have at least finished high school, but can't write in cursive. Mostly it's the 20-somethings, though.)

;_; THEN MY CAREER AS A WRITER IS ALREADY OVER.
