Days later; after the incident, Jack was working on his paperwork when Ianto came to the office. He smiled up at his lover when Ianto placed a tray with dinner for two on the desk and without thinking twice about it he pushed the files asides.
He was going to ask what Ianto had done in the bunker, because he had locked it; but even though Jack had the curiosity of a child, he had behaved the entire day wanting to be surprised during the night.
The Welshman had said he had a surprise for him later, so Jack was more than curious to see what it was. “Can I take a peek and then focus on dinner?”
“No? You eat all your vegetables; then you can open your present.”
Jack gave Ianto a funny look at the teasing and he started on his dinner. His nose wrinkled noticing the amount of vegetables and looked at his lover disappointedly.
“I’ve got the same, look,” Ianto pointed out.
“Can we have real food tomorrow?” Jack asked because this was all vegetables, and even though he knew they were needed in a well balanced diet, he felt he needed something more, substantial...
“You were the one that pointed out we needed to eat more vegetables.”
“And since when did you pay any attention to what I say?”
“Always,” The Welshman retorted without hesitation, something that made Jack look up to notice Ianto was raising an amused eyebrow at him.
“I do listen, to everything you say. Whenever I do otherwise it’s most likely because I disagree, and I know you’ll not see I’m right until it’s done.”
“You’re spending way too much time with me Ianto Jones, getting so cheeky,” Jack laughed.
“Must be rubbing off on me, what is there to do?”
“You could move in with me, and see if you get tired of it rubbing off?” Jack asked, casually having a forkful of his dinner and looking up at the other man with expectant eyes.
He hadn’t planned to look expectant but now that he’d asked, he couldn’t help it.
“You, want me to move in? With you?”
“Yeah.”
“To live in the Hub?”
“Last time I checked, ´that´ was my home, so- yes,” Jack said matter of factly, and leant back in his chair, crossing both arms across his chest. “Interested?”
“That sounds familiar,” Ianto considered with a chuckle.
Jack grinned knowing exactly what Ianto was referring to, and waited for the other to answer. “So?”
“Well, it would be closer to work, and I would save money on petrol and rent, and, well… basically all the bills I pay.”
“See, very convenient,” Jack tried tempting him, and wiggled his eyebrows, “comes with a plus too.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Definitely,” Jack grinned dashingly.
“What would the plus be? You might be able to convince me right this moment.”
With out hesitation, Jack got up from his chair and went to where Ianto was sitting, leaning down after sitting on the edge of the desk he cupped the Welshman’s face in his hands and kissed him passionately, basically tongue fucking his mouth until they were both breathless.
“You can consider that a part of the plus,” Jack said, enjoying way too much Ianto’s usually pale cheeks turning red with arousal.
“Still, not all that convinced, I think, I need...” Ianto muttered, and Jack felt himself being dragged by his shirt until his lips were crushing against Ianto´s for another passionate kiss.
The Captain’s fingers tangled in Ianto’s hair and he pressed his brow to his lover’s, “Was that a yes?”
“Yes,” Ianto said breathlessly, “Yes.”
Jack grinned to himself feeling quite achieved and looked back at the locked bunker, “so, can we go see my surprise now?”
“I guess we can.”
Jack got up from where he had been sitting, and was opening the lid of the bunker, when a whooshing sound came from the middle of the Hub, near the water tower; he looked through the glass to see the Tardis materializing.
“What?”
“It’s ok,” The Captain assured Ianto, who was checking the security systems on Jack’s computer.
“Why doesn’t it read it on our monitors? None of the programs are catching the signal”
Moving to the door of his office, Jack leant against the doorpost and watched the Doctor exiting the Tardis, he wasn’t looking happy.
Jack was expecting this. Sooner or later, the Time Lord would come to give him a proper scold, but Jack was determined. He was not going to give up; not even if it cost him his life.
“Doctor,” He said coolly; a rather dry greeting after all they’d gone through. He could see it in the other man’s eyes, the reprimand written all over his features.
“Captain.”
“Jack?”
Ianto’s voice made Jack turn to smile at him reassuringly. “Would you give us a couple minutes?” He asked, guessing it could be hours, but he knew his lover well enough to know he would be as discrete as he could manage, while staying near by.
Ianto would probably go busy himself with something around the Hub to give them the time they needed to talk.
Jack noticed, perhaps for the first time ever, Ianto was looking hesitant; he was looking from him, to the Doctor in a very subtle way, but still… Jack could read the other like an open book sometimes, “I’m not going anywhere,” he promised, and that seemed to get Ianto’s attention, because the Welshman locked eyes with him.
“I came back for you, and I’m staying,” He promised, Ianto nodded, and Jack smiled back at him reassuringly.
The Doctor grabbed Ianto’s arm as he tried making his way out into the heart of the Hub, probably to head upstairs to the tourist office and started scanning him with the sonic screwdriver.
The Doctor was lucky it wasn’t Owen; he would have gotten smacked by now if it had been the medic.
“Would you be so kind as to stop using your sonic device to scan me?” Ianto asked neutrally.
“WHAT are you doing, Jack?” The Doctor hissed.
Jack stood tall and looked back at the other defiantly.
“Does he, at least, know?”
“Excuse me, ´he´ is standing right here, and you are still running a scan on ´him´, without ´his´ authorization,” Ianto pointed out, moving a step back.
Jack chuckled at Ianto’s reaction and pressed a hand to the small of his back.
“Tell him,” The Doctor demanded.
“In due time,” Jack retorted, glaring at the other man. “Ianto, would you please?” He gave his lover a pleading look, and soon Ianto was leaving, heading down the vaults to let them talk.
“WHAT are you doing Jack? You know you can’t do this; this is wrong, beyond wrong. The life of one single, simple man... it is the most dangerous thing to mess with.”
“I am not losing him,” Jack defied; he moved to get himself a drink and offered one to the Doctor who declined.
“You can’t keep on doing this, he died. Twice... you brought him back. I have enough with one mistake in existence on earth, I do not need two. Or three... what are you going to do? Bring them all back to life when something happens? What will the line be when it comes to choosing?”
Watching the Doctor pacing in his office Jack sat on his chair and watched him with endless patience, patience he didn’t know he had, “Just him,” The Captain replied simply.
“I know it’s wrong, but I can’t help it, I’ll keep on doing this… I am not letting go of him, not him.”
The Doctor sat before him and rested both hands on the desk, The Captain could tell the other was infuriated, but he didn’t care, nothing would stop him, not even the Doctor.
“The deadly glare, won’t make me change my mind.” Jack pointed out and emptied his glass in one go, “You’ll have to kill me, and make me remain dead, if you want me to stop.”
“Are you challenging me, Jack?”
“I am making a point, as to how far I am willing to go with this.”
“You can’t.”
“Then kill me. You know how, I saw it in your eyes when we were stuck at the end of the Universe, do it... I’m not stopping you.”
“ARGH!” The Doctor complained and raked his hands through his hair.
“What would you do? In my place, if it were Rose?” Jack asked and looked at the Doctor matter of factly. That seemed to hit a nerve, because if the Doctor was looking infuriated before; then now, now he was raving mad.
“You would have done the same,” Jack said simply.
“I would never force her to go through what I have to go through.”
“Ianto will have his choice; I am not going to keep this from him forever. He will choose, whatever he wants, I will abide. I am just not giving up on him, I love him. There were very few people in my life that I did manage to love; that loved me back just the way I am. And he loves me so much, I feel like I could shatter under his gaze sometimes,” Jack stood up and walked up to where the Doctor was, staring outside the office now.
“You know what it’s like, to have someone looking at you with endless devotion, the love shining right through them. Their eyes, settled only on you, even if there are far more handsome people around... you know how it feels to be held by that one person that makes the world stop, the universe to stay still, even if for just the slightest second... you know. You had that... you left a Dalek on the loose; knowing it could wipe out cities, because of that.”
Watching The Doctor staring outside, Jack remained silent and looked at the water falling down the water tower in the middle of the Hub.
“What you’re doing will weaken you, you will start healing with less speed, you will ache more when you die and come back. You will age... not externally. But your heart will end up giving up. A hundred years doing this, you will both die; his heart will start failing too, the strain of what you are forcing into his body will be too much for him; his human form was never meant to live for so long. You will both appear as young as you are now, to that date; but Jack, you will die and so will he.”
Jack listened, and it was his turn to stare into the distance as the Doctor had turned to look at him, “A hundred years, give or take, I can cope with that.”
“What about him? Can he cope with it? Does he want this? He died already. Twice... and you brought him back. He has no idea.”
“I will talk to him, though you probably already know what he’s going to say,” The Captain looked at the Doctor and smiled, “don’t you?” He asked with a grin and the Doctor’s look told him just enough.
Sure, timelines weren’t straight. But still, some events were just meant to be.
“You should get her back,” Jack said seriously. “There is one way, isn’t there?”
“Too dangerous.”
“Isn’t she worth the risk?”
“We are talking about the universe here, unlike you; I can’t go wandering around, and getting the people I love back. If I could, I would have done that before.”
“Doctor, you can get her back; safely enough at that. What are you so afraid of? She might have changed her mind?” He asked with an amused chuckled, “It’s Rose, she will wait for you forever. Always.” He pointed out and met eyes with the Time Lord.
“She’s safe where she is Jack. I bring her back, then what? I lose her again? I watch her die?”
“Isn’t that her choice?”
“Using my words against me Captain?”
Jack chuckled and shook his head, “Just pointing that out. I think she would rather spend whatever time she has by your side, than ´safe´ in a parallel dimension. Which is, by the way, swarming with Cybermen and Daleks; did you actually think of that?” He asked almost casually, with a frown and noticed the Doctor giving him a conceding, pained look.
“She was good dealing with Daleks and Cybermen; alien threats in general. I am confident she is doing well.”
“Let me get things straight; you love her, but you won’t get her back so as not to get her killed, but you leave her in a parallel world where not a single soul is safe?” He asked and frowned in confusion.
“I do not expect you to understand the complexity of my situation, Jack,” The Doctor said blankly and stared ahead again.
“No, I know you don’t; because there is no plausible reason for you not to get her back. Sure it’s risky, I know as much, despite whatever you might think you know about me. But that isn’t what stops you,” he looked at the Time Lord with knowing eyes. “Is it the fear of losing her again? The burning feeling you felt when she was standing a little too close, when she fixed your jacket, when she pushed your hair out of your eyes...” he chuckled.
“She never pushed my hair out of my eyes!”
Jack raised an enquiring eyebrow and just looked at the other.
“Well, maybe once or twice, I was too busy fixing some things in the Tardis... she just did it. I wasn’t going to tell her off, it was rather helpful.”
Jack laughed, and shook his head, “Get her back!” He said trying to snap the other from his daze. “I am not saying we should do things that we know for sure will cause real damage. But these things, even though big are small compared to many others which are done for the pettiest reasons we can think of...”
“You really do love him, don’t you?”
“In ways I didn’t know I could love someone,” Jack nodded and met the other’s eyes. “You do understand don’t you?”
“Yeah,” The Doctor said ruefully and cocked his head to the side whilst making a pained face before sitting again, “Its just wrong, Jack.”
“Thinking in a black to white scale, this is light grey, when considering how bad it can get,” The Captain pointed out; “Ianto is worth this and more.”
“He’s worth your own life?”
“Yes,” Jack replied with out hesitation, because he had no need to think of an answer to that question.
“You know, I never thought I’d see the day...”
“I know, it’s quite shocking to me too, just imagine it, from the fifty first Century to this; I am ´really´ going native!” Jack laughed and went to sit again; he noticed the doctor examining Ianto’s dinner and nodded for him to eat if he wanted some.
“He didn’t get to touch it and is all organic,” He pointed out.
“Really?”
“Yeah, we have our periods; junk food days, organic food days... body paint food days...” He said innocently and laughed at the Doctor’s eye roll.
“Some things never change,” The Doctor said as he started on Ianto’s dinner.
“Some things, need no changing,” Jack retorted and restarted on his meal, as he’d become distracted talking to the Doctor; who had, at last, apparently gotten the idea he wasn’t going to change his mind and that it would really take killing him for good, to stop him from doing what he was doing to Ianto.
Either killing him for good or having Ianto telling him that this was not something he would live with.
Jack knew he had an imminent talk with the young Welshman coming up; he just needed to find the right words for it. Which was more difficult than anyone would think, especially if one consider that Ianto was the one who usually prepared all the papers for the conferences he had with the PM and UNIT and what not.
TBC...
More author’s notes: Sorry about the not so little mistake regarding Dr. Who reference, and Pete´s universe regarding Cybermen and Daleks. Even though I am pretty sure there are still Cybermen around, his world. Daleks and all the Cybermen we saw invading Canary Wharf and the universe The Doctor saved are somewhere else (we don´t really want to know where though, do we?)
Anyways, my fault. I went through it in my mind several times and still missed it. I will punish myself for it by watching all Dr. Who seasons one more time. O:o)
