Days later, after the day they had gone out from the Hub to have breakfast by the bay, Jack found himself standing in Ianto’s kitchen.
He had suggested they went out for dinner that night, just so they wouldn’t have to order in, he felt like doing something out of the ordinary that wouldn’t end up with Ianto cleaning up once they were done. Not that Jack didn’t help him. But still, he had wanted to pamper his lover a little and had suggested this really nice, quiet place.
They had found a nice table in a dimly lit corner and they had talked all night.
Jack had never been the kind of person to talk for hours, yet the place had started to empty because they were nearing closing hours. But with Ianto it seemed time flew, either that, or froze…
Opposites indeed, Jack thought to himself, but he was not sure which term was the most accurate.
He was guessing it froze, because when he was with Ianto, nothing else seemed to matter. His attention was solely Ianto’s unless some alien had decided to pop up for a visit, in which case, both of them would have to get back to work.
But then, once again, when considering Ianto’s human frailty, time didn’t still enough. It flew, escaped through his fingers as if he were trying to get a grip on a handful of sand.
It just slipped away, until it was gone.
One day, his time with Ianto would be gone… and nothing he did, nor would or could do would be enough to keep the other with him. Would it?
“You know, if you want coffee, you can either get on with it, trying not to break my coffee machine in the process of preparing it; or, call me to get you some.”
Jack looked over his shoulder and smiled brightly at Ianto who was looking at him with amusement, his hair still messy from bed. This had to be the first time they actually slept in a bed that wasn’t Jack’s camp bed in the Hub… he should have probably thought of this before, shouldn’t he?
Not living outside, Jack was not sure he really liked to stay in a place as vulnerable as an average apartment or house… but still, a nice large comfortable bed which would end up being used only one sided, as they had a tendency to snuggle up when sleeping, had advantages.
Well, when Ianto slept, because Jack just rested his eyes most times.
“Those are two options, yes,” He replied, “But you, you should be sleeping, I was going to surprise you with breakfast,” He frowned feeling a little bit frustrated now that the Welshman was up. His plans were ruined.
There it was again, ´the´ look Jack was getting of late, “What? I can’t bring you breakfast to bed? You’re always getting me breakfast,” He pointed out.
“It was always part of my job,” Ianto reminded.
“Are you saying you prepare my breakfast because it’s your job?” Jack raised an eyebrow and looked at the other feeling a little bit puzzled and a little bit amused.
“No, not now. I like pampering you whenever I have the chance. I know how much you like your breakfast, that’s why I get it for you every morning.”
“Hmm, see, I like the idea of pampering you too. Doesn’t that sound fair enough?” Jack asked wrapping his arms around Ianto’s as the younger man moved closer to hug him from behind, resting his chin on the Captain’s shoulders.
“It does sound fair enough,” Ianto agreed.
Jack smiled to himself when feeling Ianto kissing his cheek and shifting his head enough he brushed his lips with the other’s in a tender morning kiss. “So, I can prepare breakfast?” He asked knowing Ianto to be a little bit of a control freak when it came to coffee or kitchens, or office supplies or anything that the Welshman considered to be ´his´ domain.
“Yes you can, can I help?”
“Does that mean, ´Sure Jack, I will ´help´ meaning you will do most things yourself and have me watching to make me think, I prepared it, when it was indeed all your doing?”
Jack grinned when the other laughed heartily and The Captain brushed his fingers against the other’s cheek whilst Ianto locked eyes with him as he beamed him a smile.
“No, I meant help as in, teaching you how to use the coffee machine and how not to set the toaster to a temperature that will burn the toast,” He said softly.
“Are you thinking of that one time-”
“One, time?”
“Alright, those, times that I happened to miscalculate the amount of time food needed to be in the microwave? And…”
“We had to get rid of the microwaves because the plastic parts were burnt, yup. Was thinking along the lines of those, times.”
Jack chuckled and rolled his eyes. “Fine, do teach me how to use these things. You’ll see, if I was able to manipulate one of these, then those, are a piece of cake,” He pointed to his wrist wrap and nodded sagely.
“I am sure; you were the only one to figure out the coffee machine at the Hub the first time I explained how to use it to you all.”
Watching the adoring grey eyes, Jack smiled dreamily and nodded, “Alright then, tell me how these are used. I’ll not burn a thing. Nor, set anything on fire…” He added because there had being that one time where he had accidentally left a cloth a little bit too close to the stove and things had gotten, messy.
Breakfast went without further problems, Jack soon got to grips with to how to use the appliances in Ianto’s kitchen; and eventually they drove Ianto’s car to the Hub. Ianto had suggested that the SUV remained at the Hub; just in case the team needed it and they had made it there before either of them could.
By afternoon, close to six pm Jack was ´listening´ to Owen as he went on about something he had discovered but kept on thinking about Ianto’s bed.
It had been awfully comfortable compared to the one he had down there, he couldn’t help but allow his eyes to drift to the hole in the floor that led to his ´bedroom´
“Jack.”
“Hmm?” He asked and looked at Owen who wasn’t looking too happy, “Sorry, you were saying?”
“Did you hear anything I said?”
“Of course I did, I just lapsed for a second. I was listening,” Jack assured him as Ianto brought them both a mug of steaming coffee and some files under his arm for Jack to go through later on.
“What was I talking about?” Owen demanded whilst getting his mug.
“…”
“HE IS IMPOSIBLE!” The doctor snapped and got up from where he was sitting across from Jack. “Most likely YOUR fault tea boy,” He scowled and stomped his way out of the office, deciding to leave Jack to his thoughts.
“Wait! I know! It was about, about that mermaid?” Jack called out.
“Tomorrow, Harkness, get it out of your system so you can actually listen!” Owen called out and got his jacket to leave.
Ianto looked from Jack to the doctor who was exiting and he headed to the door, “If you don’t bring the mug back Owen, you get a paper cup tomorrow because you always complain about the ones I bought,” He called out and watched the other man waving his hand in the air before leaving for good.
“What was that about?” Jack asked feeling a little bit confused as to why Owen was leaving, he had been a little bit absent, he could have easily repeated what he had said for the past- hour, couldn’t he?
“You; tell me what that was about,” Ianto said sitting opposite Jack and looked at him.
Jack gave Ianto big blue puppy eyes, having no idea what he meant by that.
“You’ve been off for days now, a week and half actually. Last Tuesday.”
Ianto had to point it out for him, hadn’t he? Of course he remembered, he always remembered everything... That had being the day Ianto had hurt his wrist in a struggle whilst they tried to apprehend a Weevil. A sore wrist and a couple cuts, nothing bad, but still. It was a good reminder as to what could really happen.
“What has you this distracted Jack? Is there something wrong? Something we should know about? Something that might be haunting you? And, you don’t want to talk about it?”
The Captain couldn’t help but smile. The Welshman always knew how to approach him. He knew not to push him too far, not to ask too many questions, too personal ones. He just let Jack open up, as and when the Captain would feel able.
Slowly, Jack did find himself sharing quite a lot of his past with Ianto, the fun bits mostly because he wasn’t all too proud of many things he’s done.
He didn’t want Ianto to know he had being a conman, or a Time Agent that had left the Agency after they had stolen two years of his memories.
Jack had wanted them back, but truth to be told, present time, he wasn’t all that sure he wanted them as much. He knew they wouldn’t make him any prouder than the ones he did recollect from when he worked at the Time Agency.
“And, there you go, brooding again.”
The Welshman spoke gently and soon Jack felt tender arms wrapping around his shoulders protectively, it made him smile and rest his head back against Ianto’s shoulder.
“I was wondering if your bed would fit in my, hmm, room.”
“You were distracted thinking about my bed whilst Owen was telling you about his report concerning his mermaid?”
“Can you blame me?” Jack asked cheekily and smiled when Ianto chuckled and pretended to roll his eyes at him.
“My bed; wouldn’t fit in your ´room´ even if we cut it in half.”
“Pity, I rather liked your bed,” Jack mused out loud and closed his eyes as Ianto rubbed soothing patterns against his chest.
“Jack, what’s going on?”
Jack acknowledged the question, but he wasn’t up to an actual reply, instead he just groaned softly hoping the younger man would let it pass.
“Alright,” sighed the Welshman.
Jack felt Ianto’s hand press against the middle of his chest as it was removed; he sulked when Ianto walked away. He didn’t want to stop the cuddling.
“I’m just going to lock up.”
“Does it have to be now?” The Captain enquired and gave Ianto puppy eyes with the cute smile, which was saved only for the young Welshman.
“I guess it can wait a little bit.”
Watching Ianto sitting opposite him, across the desk Jack picked up his mug and drank some of his coffee. A pleasurable sound escaped the back of his throat as he swallowed and smiled lovingly, “What would I do with out you?” He grinned at his lover, and there it was again. That pain in the middle of his chest.
“You would find someone else to make coffee; you would find someone else to love. You would go on.”
Ianto’s reply wasn’t feasible, Jack glared at his desk before sighing deeply and rubbing his eyes, he breathed heavily.
“That’s not going to happen now,” Ianto added. “Are you still thinking of that little accident with the Weevil? Jack?”
´Little´ was one way to put it, this might have been a little one compared to what could really happen; but it was quite a big reminder of what could really happen. Yet one more time...
“Would you stay within the Hub, if I asked you to?” The Captain asked seriously, and looked at him right in the eyes. He could tell Ianto was puzzled; and he probably didn’t like what he was hearing either.
“Even, if I did agree to that. I would still end up dying, Jack. I can’t stop aging. You know, someday; I will die.”
“What if you had the option? If you could live forever?”
“But I can’t, unless you found the Fountain of Youth.”
Jack chuckled and tightened his fingers around the blue striped mug. The Fountain of Youth; apparently came with the Fountain of life... or so it seemed up to this point.
“We talked about this; the more we worry the less we enjoy our time together, we both know it is going to happen, let’s just enjoy whatever time we do have together. Long, short, doesn’t matter as long as it is you and me...”
“I know,” Jack said not sure how to continue this conversation in an objective way.
The Rift alarm went off and both men looked towards the computers, Jack moved to check on Tosh’s, which was the one with the most updated programs and files, and located alien activity in the middle of the city.
Instructing the computer to show the CCTV images, he looked at the screen, which was currently frozen by Jack to see if he recognized the species.
Once Jack had, briefly, explained about it, both of them got their coats and guns and headed to the SUV. The situation didn’t look like much more than a two man job.
There was no real need to bother the rest of the team.
* * * * *
Jack sat by the bed in where he had laid Ianto. As soon as he had managed to get the alien into one of the cells he had driven them to Ianto’s place. The alien wasn’t a threat and from what it looked like, it had had dinner too, so it could most definitely wait until the next morning.
Stretching his legs in the bed, he pushed Ianto’s hair off his face and watched him sleep. The Captain had lost his shoes, shirt and braces long ago whilst waiting for Ianto to wake up.
If possible, he looked even more beautiful whilst sleeping than when awake. But then, Jack did miss those mischievous grey eyes looking back at him; lightening up his day.
“Jack?”
“Welcome back, Sleeping Beauty,” Jack said quietly and tightened his arm around Ianto’s chest as he shifted closer.
“What happened?”
“A nasty blow, you ended up against a concrete column, I took you back to the SUV, and brought you home.”
“The alien?”
“In the cells, I’ve taken care of it for now. We’ll deal with it tomorrow.”
Noticing Ianto shift to rest his head on his chest, Jack settled more comfortably and let the other man snuggle up as much as he wanted. The Captain ran his hand along the other’s arm soothingly as he felt Ianto relaxing against his form, “Sleep Ianto, you’ll need it tomorrow,” He whispered knowing Ianto was tired, despite the mumbled complaint. Jack saw Ianto relaxing in his arms enough to sleep before Jack could tangle his fingers in the mass of hair resting on his chest, just before pressing a kiss to it, “I’m not going to lose you,” He whispered a promise to himself.
