I'm reading through Amanda Cross's Kate Fansler mysteries and ran across a lovely quote in one that was published in 1971, during the Vietnam War:

Wars. Thousands of years, and we haven't learned anything better, apparently. That's one thing about studying history - it can get depressing to see how little things change, and how unwilling anyone apparently is to learn from the past. Greece and Persia. England and France. I'm tired of writing and thinking about wars this week.
