Overheard

I had to run out to the grocery last night to pick up Neufchâtel for SO's dinner recipe - who couldn't do it, being on the phone with a parental unit. Standing in line I heard the two women behind me discussing their various ailments and medications and allergies to said medications. They then started praising Jesus for all their blessings ( Read more... )

*chuckle*

Heck, the number of modern Christians who grasp the notion that Yeshua bar Yusuf was an observant Jew is equalled by the number of LOTR fans who actually twig to the realisation that although the *author* may have been Catholic, the *characters* aren't. In other words, a very small number indeed. But then, religion isn't a subject where people tend to use their common sense.

Yes, testifying to your faith publicly is rude. Ditto having a public conversation about private medical matters. Then again, I tend to regard reckless stupidity as a capital offence, so my settings are all out of whack anyway.

I'm not prepared to go quite that far, but at one point I had a button that said: "Gene police: YOU! Out of the pool."

I have on occasion emailed people in my office during the time they are making their private telephone calls to say, "I'm hearing this, I wish I wasn't, and it's being a distraction" -- because, well, I might as well. Can't get any work done till the distraction is over.

And I'd be rude both ways if I interrupt while it's happening or if I bring it up later* ... but if I send the email "in the heat", as it were, I get less backtalk.

*I should be able to bring up something in a calm way later, but I've been told I shouldn't be making a "big deal" out of trivia.

which for some reason people treat as being private, when they clearly are not.

I so don't want to get one. My observations tell me that at least 95% of the conversations people have on them are unnecessary. "But I have to tell SO to pick up milk!" No, you could remind them in the morning - it just takes thinking ahead. I think cells encourage disorganization, frankly. But I might have to get one for emergency use - driving a 166-mile round trip to work, most of it on freeway with no other means of communication available. If I had a breakdown or an accident or ran into really bad weather, it could get sticky. *sigh*

I think you're perfectly justified in telling people that they need to keep their conversations low and to a minimum! You're at work, after all. It's one thing if it's a work-related call, quite another if it's personal.
