i keep forgetting to update this, and i've no idea why i'm remembering now, but anyway...it turns out that, technically, my computer can handle the games i own....i have a fast enough processor, and a good enough graphics card, and MORE than enough memory. i even helped jeff figure this out, so i'm not completely made of fail! just partially...cuz ( Read more... )

mac is not my friend. and yes, i'd need to buy all new software, one of the many reasons why mac is not my friend. i only hear good things as well tho; they're pretty, and simple, and reliable. i'm just not willing to make the switch. pc's are my friend. as broken and dysfunctional as they are. :)

So I know with the new Dell Laptops we bought here at work we were able to choose between XP and Vista so I know it is possible, at least with some computers.

i'm going by fry's. all their pc's are preloaded with vista. it hasn't occurred to me to go directly to a provider. maybe i should do that...wouldn't that be more expensive tho?

But the first thing I do with ANY computer I get is do a clean install of the operating system. I've done it with all of my Dell / Gateway and now even my Macs. I just like to feel as if I know what is going into my computer and avoid the advertspyware that they tend to load them up with prior to shipping.

As for a new computer, if you still have an XP disk lying around you could always get a Mac and dual boot, or VM XP. The VM wouldn't be very game friendly, but you could have a work / play machine all in one with dual booting. Though, honestly while they're fast, stable and well built I don't know what sort of issues you might run into with games made for PCs ... or even if you would run into problems with it.

Make the switch ... you know you want to.

It's amazing how the Mac people can suddenly just start crawling out of the woodwork.

Though, I'd have a Mac at this point, if they didn't charge a down payment of an arm and a leg for them. And their software.

Fry's is not amazingly cheap. You're probably better off going to Buy.com, and getting one of the deals on Acers. Alternatively, I can help you build one from parts - Central Computer can sell you an OEM version of XP, if you buy the motherboard, CPU, and case from them.

They also have knowledgeable salesmen, which helps for getting the parts you need.

Heh. Ya know, I've even forgotten what OEM stands for. Lessee: Original Equipment Manufacturer.

Which isn't the important part. The important part is that it's between 30% and 50% cheaper than buying it normally.

ahhh. i like it! :) i've been toying with the idea of building my own computer for awhile anyway, cuz then i can make sure i get everything i want, but i can never figure out if it will be cheaper or more expensive to do so, and the truth is, due to my lack of knowledge, i don't actually know what i want, lol...
