Summaries - Do you like them or hate them? How do you come up with them, if you use them?
I always make an attempt at a summary. Sometimes it may be as simple as declaring it to be a fic set just after an episode (Post-ep) or even a missing scene. Sometimes it can be difficult to ‘tease’ potential readers without giving *too* much away!
One thing I’ve always made a habit of though, is when I’m writing a multi-chapter fic, I’ll always put a ‘previously in this fic’ summary at the start of each new chapter, so as to refresh reader’s memories. (useful in cases where I haven’t exactly been all that prompt in my updating!)
Coming up with a summary? It really depends on the story. If the fic was written for a prompt, then that’s often as much of a summary as I’ll use. Other times it takes a lot of head scratching. One thing I try to avoid is giving away anything that might happen after the first page or so of the story - I always hate it when the blurbs on backs of books give away something that doesn’t happen until the last few chapters.
