Warnings - What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a fic?
Generally speaking - where applicable - I’ll warn for the more common triggers e.g. non-con, character death etc. While not a fic, any time I used to post my reviews/comments on episodes, I would generally preface them with the caveat that I was not a fan of [insert my least favourite character] and as such, my reviews would reflect that opinion. And indeed, on the occasions that I wrote ‘bashing’ fics, I would also include that in the warnings.
Originally, I used to also warn for slash. But that was mostly the common practice in the sites/lists I started out on, and failure to ‘warn’ would frequently result in a flurry of emails/reviews along the lines of how ‘slash is disgusting’, ‘character X and Y aren’t gay’, ‘you suck’ etc. Nowadays if I get complaints, I point them to the clearly labelled pairing section and if they couldn’t/didn’t read it, then that’s their problem.
Unusual things to warn for include, fluff, gratuitous nudity. I used to write a series of ‘snippet’ fics (random short scenes), and after many many similar comments, ended up putting a ‘don’t be eating or drinking while reading this’ warning on each new chapter!
