We are into taper territory now, so after yesterday's 5k, I only had 4 miles on the plan today. Good thing too! All last week I was very tired, and I didn't sleep well on Friday night. I seem to have made up for that now. Saturday afternoon was a 2 hour nap, and I went to bed at 9:30 last night. I've slept 11 hours in the last 24. I got up around 7:30 with the intention of getting out for a run as soon as I could, maybe 8:15. However, Kilo had gone missing, so I didn't get out to run until 9. He's been recovered, and I have a nice big scratch on my forearm to prove it. I know he was scared but it seems like attacking the person rescuing you would be counterproductive.
It was 66 degrees when I checked the weather at 8:00, sunny, and humid. It was up to 69 when I got home. After months of running in 45 degree weather, I'm REALLY not used to the heat. And, I feel justified in referring to a 20 degree increase in temperatures as heat. I have no idea what I'm going to do in July. Between the temps and fatigue from yesterday's race I told myself as I took off that a pace over 11 min/mile was totally acceptable. The main focus today was going to be to keep my heart rate down after yesterday's 199 BPM effort. My left hamstring, right side of my back, and my right oblique all made themselves known while I ran. The second two I'm assuming are a result of running through the pain I felt at yesterday's race.
Speaking of the weather, I am writing this from the back porch. It's lovely sit in the shade weather today. And as I'm sitting here, Kilo is trying to push the screen out of the back window, the same maneuver he used to free himself from the bathroom window over night last night. I feel like if being outside results in huddling against the house in terror on the front porch, you'd stop bothering to do it. Clearly, my brain is too large to understand these activities.
Back to the run. On Gratiot I ran past the site of what was clearly a bad crash last night. There were stray car parts in the middle of the intersection. Oh yeah, and the bus shelter on the corner had been completely demolished and there was glass and metal strewn across the parking lot behind where it used to be. There was a downed light pole as well. Holy crap.
I ended up running an 11:21 min/mile pace, with an average heart rate in of 157 BPM and a max of 175 BPM. That's the range I was shooting for, maybe a little higher than desired at the end. I'm glad I slowed down for the heat. If it's this warm at the race, I'll be unhappy. The race is a week from today. The forecast for Byron, MN for Saturday has lows in the 40s highs in the 60s which would be perfect.
